Opening a Meat Bun stuffed with video game shirts

I’m pretty sure this news has been passed around the block, but if you didn’t hear about Meat Bun, Mike McWhertor of Kotaku fame just opened up a store with gamer clothes. The seeds of the project started at Tokyo Game Show 2006 when McWhertor went to Beams to pick up an Every Extend Extra Shirt. Prototypes were printed around E3 2007.

The goal of Meat Bun is to make nods at their favorite games, but without resorting to things “done to death” like 1up mushrooms. Right now the store has shirts inspired by Street Fighter II, Spy Hunter and the cult hit Typing of the Dead. I admire how they are not afraid to take risks with lesser known titles. Usually, video game wear is derived from platinum hits. I have seen plenty of Halo, Mario and Guitar Hero shirts, but no Persona 3 clothing, at least in North America.

Actually, I asked McWhertor about making a Persona 3 shirt, but not something basic with the main character silk screened on the front. My idea was to design a t-shirt with a print of the protagonist’s school uniform, headphones and dangling digital music player. Sort of like a mock tuxedo shirt, but Persona style. The idea evolved into making a sweater based on the iconic tattoos from the player controlled demi-fiend from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. For now this idea is a dream since Meat Bun is sticking to franchises they are experienced with. However, they are interested in working with artists who are passionate about games. Anyone artists feel like drafting a SMT inspired shirt?

The other good news is McWhertor offered to give a t-shirt away to a Siliconera reader! Instead of making this a complicated contest, this will be easy. Just post what shirt you would like in the comments by Wednesday, March 26 10PM PST.

Your idea for the Persona 3 shirt is awesome. Personally, I’d love to see a Suikoden II shirt somewhere out there. Still, doesn’t hurt, and the hubby could use some new game related duds. Fight Night (army).

Super Neo Mega Turbo!

(Mainly because I ordered the Nintendo crew t’ earlier this week.)

I’d love a Fight Night shirt to make my friends who love SF jealous and to make my friends who hate SF angry. Then everyone will have bad vibrations, ohoho.

Course, if Nocturne clothes came out, love will be all around.

I’m into the SNMT shirt just for the nod to TG16, but at 33$ I feel like I have other priorities for that money. A P3 shirt would be hard to resist, however.

A wall of pixelated mechas from old Front Mission games would look good too. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen any mech inspired shirts…

(Super Neo Mega Turbo)

These shirts are kinda pricey. Very cool though.

SomeDude Says:

The only shirt on that site that’s worth even $5 is the Fight Night shirt.

The “The Four” shirt is absolutely bile inducing, especially since most signs point to Hiroshi getting the yakuza to kill Gunpei. (Read the account of his death. Not only are accounts conflicting, but they all have multiple cars hitting Yokoi and nobody finding the killers…AFTER Yokoi starts work on the Wonderswan.)

RagolSlayer Says:

A large Fight Night(army) for me.

nika Says:

I love your shirt idea. (maybe because I love the fake tuxedo ones aswell?) the idea of having fake headphones hanging around your neck rules xD

as for the shirts competition. I love the auto shirt (eep, I’ve never been interested in those things before o.O xD) small :3

kakashi Says:

The “Fourth Gen” shirt is pretty cool, especially with the SUPER and the NEO, both of which had really great games. The SNES is still one of my favorite consoles of all time.

However, I’d like to win the “Fight Night” t-shirt, because I haven’t stopped playing SF2 since I first played it in the arcades. While most gamers I know have moved on, I still love SF2.

JC Fletcher Says:

SomeDude: S-seriously? I have never heard these “yakuza” rumors except as jokes. It kinda makes sense in a way, but I’m just… not sure.

Anyway, that’s the shirt I’d want. The one that inspired that comment. In black, of course.

SomeDude Says:

JC Fletcher: Nintendo has yakuza connections. They started out as a playing card company. Who do you sell high end hanafuda to? People who run gambling institutions. Who’s always got a hand in those? Organized crime. (Especially in times and areas where gambling is illegal, as it was during Meiji Era Japan, when Nintendo was founded. Don’t forget, Nintendo also tried opening a love hotel…You get the feeling if they opened one now, it’d be far more popular.)

Also, the Japanese yakuza’s totally different than the US/European version of “gangsters”. They have full on addresses for businesses and such in Japan. It’s a legitimately recognized “occupation”.

There’s no “smoking gun”, but there’s enough evidence to make Yamauchi and Nintendo primary suspects in his death. Since the case won’t be investigated any more, they’re the ones I blame for it.

I’d like to see the Hermit (the way he looks on your abilities menu) from Clash at Demonhead on a shirt. That would be fucking rad.

LittleOni Says:

Having a problem seeing my comments posted on the site… :(

LittleOni Says:

…oh…there it is…never mind…
