What if Crisis Core included multiplayer?

ccpsp2.jpgCrisis Core: Final Fantasy VII comes to North America tomorrow with an added feature, hard mode. No multiplayer, but at one point Hajime Tabata, the director of Crisis Core, was considering it. On the newly opened Square Enix members site there is an interview with Tabata where he says, “we also considered implementing a multiplayer competitive/cooperative mode using the PSP network function, but again, this wasn’t realized due to scheduling concerns.”

A versus mode where two Zacks battle each other could have been an option, but the randomness of the DMW events would make fights entirely too random. The idea about a cooperative mode is more intriguing as I imagine this would include a partnership between Zack and Cloud. This probably wouldn’t be anything like Final Fantasy VI’s co-op multiplayer where a second person gets to pick battle commands. Unfortunately, co-op, episode pretext and additional story elements are sitting on “the cutting room floor.”

Just for fun, how do you think Square Enix would have made Crisis Core work for two players?

I could see Co-op being like Phantasy Star Online. That would actually be really cool!
