Watch – Hammering with Harry, Ikuze Gensan gameplay

I remember playing Hammering Harry when I was a kid, but the memory imprint was not deep enough to make an instant connection between the Game Boy game and Ikuze Gensan. Thanks for the reference Insert Credit!

Whether you’re familiar with Irem’s character or not, the PSP game should be easy to understand. You walk slowly and carry a huge hammer. Sometimes you carry a hammer. Other times you are dressed up like a sushi chef who summons tidal waves and whacks enemies with a giant fish or a baseball player hitting enemies out of the park. There are eight outfits in Ikuze Gensan, which range from urban DJ to scuba diver. Two of them are shown in the gameplay trailer below.

Yeah, Ikuze Gensan looks simple, but that’s the beauty of it. You don’t always need an emotionally charged story or innovation. Sometimes wacky 2.5D platforming is enough. Japan gets this sometime in May, North America has no corresponding announcement. However, Irem works with Atlus and Agetec. Perhaps, one of them will translate the text and bring Hammering Harry back from the grave.

Oh man, I used to love playing Hammering Harry back in the arcades! What a great find, thanks for the headsup on a game I wouldn’t mind having for nostalgia’s sake. The music, although incredibly pretty, seemed a strange choice for the trailer.. was expecting something a bit more pop-y, but I find it endearing enough to want to have if it comes out as part of a soundtrack (which I’d then hope the rest of the music would be just as good).
