Super Robot Taisen, Sunrise style

By Spencer . April 2, 2008 . 8:08am

sunrise.jpgWhile we’re discussing robot mashup strategy RPGs, did you know Sunrise is working on their take on the Super Robot Taisen franchise? Battle of Sunrise brings together mecha from thirty years of animation production onto a single PlayStation 2 game. Lesser known giant robots like Layzner sit next to a mobile suit from Char’s Counterattack. So far the list of series is Gundam light, a refreshing change, but Sunrise didn’t include anything from Escaflowne or Big O. Disappointing, but GaoGaiGar is on there.

Here are the franchises featured in Battle of Sunrise thus far:

Ginga Hyoryu Vifam

Armored Trooper Votoms

Kikokai Galient

Blue Comet SPT Layzner

Metal Armor Dragonar

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack

Raijin-Oh

GaoGaiGar

Besides the robots the gameplay looks strikingly similar to the Super Robot Taisen series. You move on a hexagonally divided battlefield (OK, there’s a difference) and dish out attacks with 3D cutscenes. Sunrise cut a nice release window since there aren’t any Super Robot Taisen games coming out around April 10th. If you want a new giant robot strategy RPG game next week this is it.

Hmm…not really sure about this…looks a bit dull. =/

Though I’ll probably end up buying it.(I am a sucker for mecha-themed SRPGs after all <.<; ) I am somewhat interested since it has Vifam and Votoms(both of them have yet to appear in an SRW game). Also, having GaoGaiGar or Raijin-Oh in a game is an instant win in my book =3
