There are multiple exits per level, usually one easy exit and then one or more difficult exit. So, you just need to plan your route around level 9, and any other levels you get stuck on.

IMO, Umihara Kawase is kind of like a platformer for people who like shooters (Gradius, R-Type, etc). The point isn't just to slog through and beat it once, because it's designed to be pretty short. The point is mastery—learning new techniques so you can make it through ALL the doors and fields, or finishing without losing a life, or racing through the fields to beat your best time.

...What's really frustrating is that the game is supposedly a buggy mess of a port, which really sabotages the way it's meant to be played.

I'm gonna get it anyway since I can't afford the $200 PS1 version, but I'm really hoping they decide to do a bug-fixed reprint or a recall, first :(

@alice - Yeah, the controls are unorthodox. I think they go against our honed gamer instincts, which makes Umihara Kawase Portable such a difficult game to get into.

I tried the demo just recently and found the controls too obtuse for me to enjoy. I guess I should take the time to learn how to play correctly so I can enjoy it.
