McDonalds and Monster Hunter, a gamer’s paradise?

By Spencer . April 14, 2008 . 5:29am

I don’t frequent McDonalds, but I have noticed groups of PSP owners huddled into a booth when I stopped in once for a late night snack. I wasn’t aware that this was common in Hong Kong. According to weekly game magazine, Gamestation it is and the house of Ronald is also a house for Monster Hunter. Let’s forget that their last two covers featured Monster Hunter Portable 2G and look at an article from their latest issue.

This is a list of 24 hour McDonalds featured in Gamestaton as a suggestion of where to meet up for Monster Hunter. While this may sound strange, McDonalds isn’t that bad a meeting place. Cheap food, free use of Wi-Fi (time limited, but it’s free) and some locations open all night. It’s like a bring your own internet café with fries.

I remember Nintendo had a promotion with McDonalds to equip their restaurants with Wi-Fi in the USA, but after the announcement not much was said about it. Has anyone taken advantage of it? Happy meals and Pokemon trading sound like a good mix for McDonalds, but it’s far from the phenomenon it could be.

There’s a name for these kids too, McGamers, a sub-category of McRefugees. As coined by the local news.

I just wonder why Circle K and 7-11 hasn’t became a MH hotspot yet…

Spencer Says:

@Archer - I’m familiar with “McRefugees” I didn’t know of the McGamers subcategory. Thanks for the enlightenment. Maybe Circle K and 7-11 haven’t been as big because they don’t have seats? Snack choice is much better there though.

narley Says:

True, better snacks and no seats, although if you think about it they are not in the best location to become a “famouse” or “good” hotspot, since circleK and 7-11 stores are not in malls or near a well known area, people would rather choose a place like MCdnlds to meet up since everybody knows where its at. + snacks are good in those places, but if your in the mood for something less light like a hot dog or a cheese burger, fries even, some of the AM-PM style food out there tastes like newspaper. MCdnlds isnt that good either, but its better.

I’d still prefer a Carl’s junior Double western though.

There are Carl’s Juniors in Hong Kong now?

There used to be Hardee’s in HK… It was just as sad as being in a Hardee’s in the States.
