On balancing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Capcom isn’t sidestepping specifics when David Sirlin, the lead designer of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, talks about his work. In an interview over at Gamasutra Sirlin explains he wants to “get you past the beginner phase into the intermediate phase” faster by easing the controls. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix removes the Tiger Knee motions and replaces them with other commands like quarter circle forward / Dragon Punch inputs. This removes the challenge of learning the Tiger Knee command without needlessly jumping forward, but this change is a wise one. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix becomes slightly more accessible with easier controls and allows intermediate players to experiment with characters other than Ryu.

Speaking of Ryu, Capcom gave him a fake fireball. M. Bison has a fake slide too, which is about all of the new moves announced thus far. Considering the complexity of adding new attacks in I wouldn’t expect Blanka getting a lightning bolt projectile or anything like that. Sirlin believe balancing old moves and making them useful essentially gives old characters new attacks. Capcom has been posting really great summaries of the changes on their blog and a semi-meta post which chronicles the changes of the changes. We’re still not through with all of the characters yet like Vega and I'm still far from being a tournament level player.

Tournament level play fascinates me but I will probably never get to that level myself if only because I am not willing to invest the time it would take to play like that.

fortunately, the traditional version will be part of this package too.

a lot of the changes are for the worse, i feel. just like the ecosystem, sf2 has a delicate balance. though zangief is often regarded as a low-tier character, i have a good friend who regularly knocks out a little more than his fair share of nyc and philly tourney players. beefing up zangief will likely make my struggle to win against said friend an exercise in futility.

this revision’s updates will probably require updates and re-balances of their own. get ready for super street fighter II turbo hd remix champion edition.

And Capcom will continue marching ahead, forging new ground in the field of “Holy Shit, Can Your Video Game Titles GET ANY LONGER?!”

I´ll have to agree with thaKingRocka, changes like these could affect for the worse the excellent time-tested gameplay that SSF II already has…and are definetly not necessary. And personally, I´m not convinced at all with the new art designs (same with SF IV). I would prefer that Akiman and the rest of the original designers worked on both games instead of Udon and whoever is in charge of SF IV.
PS: and now that I´m complaining about SF…I also like to say again that I would prefer SF IV to be a 2D sprite-based game (with high resolution graphics like Guilty Gear and Blazblue). Yes, I had to say it…
