Super Mario RPG on Japan’s Virtual Console in June

By Spencer . May 30, 2008 . 3:01am

smrpg.jpgJust because WiiWare is stealing headlines, the Virtual Console isn’t dead. Nintendo still has buckets of classics to release and Super Mario RPG is one of them. Japan will see the Squaresoft and Nintendo collaboration on the Virtual Console sometime in July with premium pricing. Super Mario RPG commands a price tag of 900 Wii Points ($9) instead of the usual 800 Wii Points ($8).

I’m translating the rest of the Virtual Console list as you’re reading this so check this space for the full list soon.

And here is the full list for June! Games marked with an asterisk will come out on June 3rd.

Famicom (500 Wii Points)
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa *
Transformers: Convoy no Nazo
Nekketsu Koko Dodgeball Bu
Yoshi's Cookie

Super Famicom (usually, 800 Wii Points)
Super Mario RPG (900)

Sega Master System (500)
Rambo* (called Ashura in Japan)

Mega Drive (usually, 600 Wii Points)
Phantasy Star IV (700)

PC Engine (600 Wii Points)
Power Tennis*
Days of Thunder (800)
Blazing Lazers

Neo Geo (900 Wii Points)
King of the Monsters*
Ninja Commando
Art of Fighting 2

Eggy (delayed until further notice)

I can't believe Tomy is releasing that horrible Transformers game. Otherwise, this month is going to be fantastic with Phantasy Star 4, King of the Monsters, a Kunio Kun dodgeball game and Super Mario RPG.

Wow, so SE finally manages to make it available to the VC huh? I really hope NOA releases it stateside…..I never played it before(didn’t like RPG’s back then) and would really like to now. Heard so much praise for it… bring Chrono Trigger too!

  • Aoshi00

As soon as I saw “Super Mario RPG”, my immediate thought was Chrono Trigger on the VC too, I would love that. I think I vaguely remember the Transformers game.

Damn you Nintendo for region-locking (unlike the Jpn Xbox Live mktplace and PSN), I want the shougi game and now this.. at least we should be getting it soon, just a matter of time.

  • Reign1770

Why do you give us a VC list of Japan for? to tease us? Wii need a U.S. list, who cares what they get.

  • ryne11

I hope we get it eventually

  • @Reign1770 – Because it’s interesting? Because it’s a good indicator of what’s to come in the near future? Siliconera has been posting Virtual Console lists for Japan for over a year now.

Since websites can be access from almost every where, it can be good for people who read this site who live in Japan and know they can get it. Don’t just assume that everyone who comes here aren’t from Japan or don’t care about Japanese releases.

    hope it comes to europe

One of the best RPGs I have ever played…let´s hope that it doesn´t take too long to appear in the rest of the world. Personally, I have already played the game several times and I´m fortunate enough to have a copy available through my brother…but I´m glad that those who never had the chance to play the game (legally…) will be able to do so…soon…hopefully…

I can´t speak for everyone, but in my case, one of the main reasons why I come to Siliconera is to check these kind of Japan-only news…news that practically don´t appear on other sites. And by the way, I´m not from Japan…
