Nintendo kills the Freeloader with firmware update?

By Spencer . June 17, 2008 . 7:26am

freeloadertc.jpgYesterday night, a new firmware update for the Wii added drag and drop Mii Parade functionality. The small update also prevents use of the “Twilight Hack” to install the Homebrew Channel, but if the channel is installed some reports indicate it will work.

A number of readers sent tips in regarding the Freeloader and that the new update renders Datel’s user friendly import device useless. The most damning evidence is a link to a photo on NeoGAF sent in by Justin (thanks!!). I can’t confirm this as fact, but Freeloader users beware. if you’re planning to play imports in the near future you may want to hold off updating your Wii.

You can use the gecko regionfree loader once you install the homebrew channel. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than worrying about Freeloader being blocked.

Remember Datel also promised to replace the Freeloaders, should they become disabled by a firmware update.

@CRIMExTHINK - I do remember, but I’m skeptical. Let’s see if they come through with their promise when a new Freeloader gets developed…
