A sneak peak at the Metal Gear Solid Database

By Spencer . June 18, 2008 . 11:30pm

The PlayStation Blog broke the word a free Metal Gear Solid Database is part of tomorrow’s update. While you’re waiting to download the freebie take a look what the 77MB file contains.

Before you enter the Metal Gear Solid Database the trademark alert sound plays with a spoiler warning. You can opt to cover information revealed in Metal Gear Solid 4 until you have a completed file or you can view the text at your own risk. After you make your choice you arrive at the menu above. Let’s take a look at the encyclopedia first.

The database contains a breadth of information with an emphasis on all of the characters in the Metal Gear Solid series.

If you click on the digital concept art you can enlarge the image.

The relationship chart is a simplified timeline that only contains events related to the Metal Solid characters. Spoilers are concealed with solid black bars.

The timeline blends actual history with the Metal Gear Solid story.

If you see a term you are unfamiliar with you can click on it, a la Wikipedia, to enter the encyclopedia. To return to the timeline press L1.

Macrophages are in the encyclopedia! The database also includes six languages: English, Japanese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Brilliant!

fuzzball5: I think the regions must match. You’ll likely need a Japanese MGS4 clear file for the Japanese database to recognize it.

My memory of everything is still pretty fresh since I just finished all 3 games recently (MGS3’s ending was so touching), but a free encyclopedia for such a complex saga is always welcome.

I can’t wait to play more of MGS4 to see how everything wraps up, just started Act 2 last night. Definitely not good at shoot-outs, tranquilizer gun and Militia camo are my best friend.
