It’s Official: Chrono Trigger DS [UPDATE 2]

Update: There's a countdown site now for Chrono Trigger DS. Information will be available at a later post as the site's clock will come to a close on July 7, 2008.

Update 2: Square-Enix's North American site has also been updated with a countdown site for Chrono Trigger DS. If that's not a form of confirmation of Chrono Trigger DS' North American release, then I don't know what is!

If you're one of the many Square-Enix fans who've clamored for the company to revisit some of their older IPs by either remaking them or porting them, then you might want to sit down for what you're about to read. As partially confirmed by the partial scan you see to the right, Jump Magazine has "confirmed" Chrono Trigger DS. Since it's a partial scan, nothing is known yet as to whether it's a full-fledged remake or an enhanced port; but once we've completed our detective work, we'll immediately update this post to let you know whether it's legit or fake. The scan even have a release date of Winter 2008 on it, so who knows if it's fake!

Until then, you must ask yourself if you're ready! Many informed forum posters have claimed this to be real and that the game will be an enhanced port of the SNES original with extra content (think FF GBA titles) and polished visuals. We'll see whether or not that's true soon enough!

< Spencer's Note: The countdown clock Rolando posted is scheduled to end on July 7, 2008 at 00:00. First details then? >

Sexy! I already own both the previous versions but frankly CT is so good, owning it a third time would be excellent — plus CT on the go, what could be more excellent!

Dr. Slump Says:

I hope it’s 2-D and uses most of the original art.

Aoshi00 Says:

About damn time, I guess this is the next best thing after “Chrono Break”. I don’t know how many times I’ve played this game though, on the SNES, Super Famicom, and PSX, but I would gladly play it again on a handheld (DS meaning no unbearable load times the PSX version?), I still think Mitsuda’s music is the best here.

The scan (looks real enough) says release date is this winter, so that wouldn’t leave them a lot of time for a lot of improvement? I hope they keep it in 2D and pack in some nice extras. Now let this be the prelude for a true Chrono sequel to come on a next-gen system. Blue Dragon was a let down, Toriyama’s lackluster design didn’t help either, I mean look at DQ V’s awesome DS cover.

Zhemos Says:

If It’s given the Final Fantasy treatment that’ll be freaking cool. But If it’s just a direct port I’ll be happy. Chrono Trigger is the best RPG game of It’s era, and one of my favorite games.

nectarsis Says:

The clock shows 12:48??

Rolando Says:

Apologies! I just realized the clock just refers to whatever time is displayed on your computer.

Hopefully most of you are excited about the news!

Ninjeff Says:

OMG YES! A Thousand Times YES!

And yes, the numbers are changing. For me, it matches the time in my area (currently 10:15pm). I think the countdown may have more to do with the notches on the left-hand side of the clock. Not sure what each one represents, but days would be a safe bet (meaning we have 8 more days).

laharsama Says:

Hell yeah.

Now all we need is the FF VII remake for the PS3

Zhemos Says:

Wonder how long it’ll take to be released in America? Even if it isn’t released here I’ll still get it. I’ve played through Chrono Trigger so many times I don’t need to know Japanese, lol.

Louise Says:

Yaaay! I hope they just port the SNES over, sprites, music, and all and not give it a 3D treatment.

Mikael Says:

I don’t mind a 3d remake, but it surely is better with port with enhanced visuals, music, and extras… if that is true!

Oh this is one of the best news since Dragon Quest 4,5,6 and Final Fantasy 4 remakes,

seiya19 Says:

My god…I don´t know how to react to this… I mean, it´s Chrono Trigger, my favorite game of all time… I hope Square-Enix know what they´re doing, I don´t want to see this masterpiece being tainted by a bad port/remake (well, aside the technical issues of the PSX version…). I also think the best way to do this would be to make it sprite-based (similar to DQ games, and with the original designs) instead of going 3D like FF III and IV…let´s see what they think.

By the way, gaming news keep surprising me lately… A new Megaman 9 in 8-bit style, a Castlevania 3D fighter, a 2D console Wario, Tatsunoko VS Capcom, a Soul Calibur game with Star Wars characters, MK VS DC…I don´t know what to expect now… Anything can happen…well, except a new Chrono game…

PS: Didn´t Square-Enix had licensing issues to release Chrono Trigger on the Virtual Console ? Because of the members that left the company ? Maybe this means that a VC release is possible now…
And thanks for the news/updates !!!

jeffx Says:

I’m super excited, but I’m hoping for way more than a straight port, as I’ve beaten the original over 9000 times.

Aoshi00 Says:

According to S-E and Famitsu, they would shed some light on this “mystery” pedulum clock on 7/7, I can’t wait to hear more about it after the July 4th weekend.

I’ve been thinking it about it last night and this morning, just what more could they add to it, character portraits in the speech windows, perhaps a handful of spoken clips (which even the PSX cutscenes didn’t have?), rearranged soundtrack, etc. Also, if it gets localized, there would probably be a new scipt like the FF remakes, unlike being on VC it’d just be a direct port. Oh, need a neat looking cover art too.

The ticking just gets me so excited, what a tease :) Thanks again for breaking this awesome news. I just can’t wait, I’d be buying 2 copies in Eng. and Jpn.

SoulCaster Says:

@seiya19

I really doubt licensing issues was the problem… FF, Chrono Series are gold mines for S-E, so why re-release these games for for about $8 a pop, when you can re-release them for for about $30/40 a pop instead.

seiya19 Says:

@SoulCaster

Maybe you´re right…but it seems that according to them, it´s not the case. After I asked that, I checked the Wikipedia article on CT and I found an interesting interview on cubed3 that stated this:

http://www.cubed3.com/news/6729/

“as for seeing Chrono Trigger return in any form (a port, remake or Virtual Console release ? the last option currently being a 50-50 in terms of happening), it would come down to working out copyright details between the various members of the original team (most of which are no longer staff at Square Enix);”

So, unless they´re lying, maybe they have just resolved the copyright issues they had. And perhaps a VC release, after the DS remake is not out of the question now…although those who have a DS would probably just go for the DS version.

By the way, they also give an explanation in the article about older FF games:

“The subject of Final Fantasy’s original versions appearing on the Virtual Console or why the NES version of FFIII was not included in the DS game also came up. Tanaka-san, open as ever, said it comes down to not being able to find all of the code, which was saved on diskettes at the time! That explains why the games did not appear as part of the Famicom Mini series as well, with Square Enix choosing to do remakes instead;”

I´m hoping they find those diskettes…
