What is a SPOG and why is it racing?

Nintendo of America has an ample supply of WiiWare games sitting in a vault. SPOGS Racing was pulled from it today. As the title suggests, it’s a racing game with a twist of crashing into other players and stealing parts. Changing the SPOG driving avatar from a racer to pirate probably doesn’t have an effect. It’s unclear if SPOGS Racing uses motion control, but the input methods it supports are: a lonely remote, nunchuck, and Classic Controller. With a limited amount of information it’s hard to plunk down 1,000 Wii Points ($10) for what aesthetically looks like a lost Nintendo 64 game.

As the WiiWare train keeps rolling on the Virtual Console locomotive continues to slow down. The only game this week is King of the Monsters for 900 Wii Points ($9). While it’s a solid kaiju monster wrestling game, you get more bang for your buck if you pick up SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1.

I wonder if the name is supposed to be a play on POGs, given that there appears to be POG-like discs inside the wheels.

I really can't wait for Mega Man 9. Not just because I'm a Mega Man fan, but also because it's probably the only reason I have any faith in Wiiware.

Seriously, if Wiiware is going to be full of trash like this, Nintendo is going to need to start releasing the games more often so we can get to the good stuff faster.
