Natsume brings Cave to North America

By Spencer . July 10, 2008 . 1:44pm

pd.jpgSpeaking of Cave, we are going to see a game from them this year in English. Natsume picked up the rights to Ohimesama Debut, which will be literally translated into Princess Debut when it comes out this fall. The Nintendo DS game is a mix of a visual novel and Elite Beat Agent for the dancing sequences. Woo princes, collect costumes, and discover one of the 14 endings. Alright, Princess Debut isn’t on the top of the Cave localization list. I doubt Yanya Caballista: City Skater was either, but Princess Debut shows at least Cave is getting courted by other companies.

Princess Debut also demonstrates how Natsume is expanding outside of Harvest Moon. Since Marvelous is making a move into North America inevitably the Harvest Moon games will be taken care of internally at Marvelous USA. Natsume’s other non-farming game has to do with Hamtaro, which was published by Marvelous in Japan.

Just a side note, but Harvest Moon creator and MMV president Yasuhiro Wada mentioned they’d likely continue publishing Harvest Moon through Natsume in America, even after Marvelous Entertainment USA was up and running.

  • @jarrod – For now Natsume will take care of Harvest Moon, but things are starting to change. It might not be today or in the next two years, but eventually Marvelous will publish them on their own when they make a name for themselves.

I think MMV will take over Rune Factory from Frontier and leave Harvest Moon to Natsume. For one, Natsume owns the Harvest Moon name, MMV would have to buy the name or go through the trouble of making a new one to take over localizing them. I think their long standing relationship will leave things as is between them, Natsume will continue to localize the games and publish them in NA and MMV/RSG will get to use the HM name in Europe.

Maybe Marvelous USA and Natsume will merge and then the problems would be solved. I think that would be a viable solution. Along with XSEED, they could become a major player in the niche title market by banding together.

IGN confirmed in their podcast on Monday that XSED is bringing over Rune Factory Frontier!

Atlus JUST announced that they are bringing over Luminous Arc II as well.

I imagine that Rune Factory 2, and Luminous Arc II, started localization before the whole XSEED and MMV agreement was final or something? Maybe it was a gentlemen’s agreement?

MMV just revealed the next Harvest Moon for the Wii in Famitsu yesterday! It would be neat if MMV did decide to bring the series over here themselves after all, but I doubt it as they did say that they’d like Natsume to continue with them.

    ……………This sucks

In the Marvelous and XSEED agreement, the latter’s acting as more of a distributor iirc, with Marvelous doing the localizations themselves I think. Offloading some projects to other experienced groups (with inbuilt fanbases) like Atlus or Natsume might still make some sense going forward honestly, Marvelous USA has quite a bit on it’s plate already.

I’m hoping someone picks up Steal Princess… ask around Spencer!

  • @jarrod – I’ve been asking about Steal Princess. For every confirmation that goes up theres tons of probing that’s already been done. Right now there isn’t any good news to report.

Will be buying this game! I’m a sucker for stuff like this in general, lol!
