Online-less Initial D: Extreme Stage discounted at Play-Asia

idon.jpgThis week Play-Asia is slashing the price of Initial D: Extreme Stage to $34.90, but this is only for the Asian release. Sega removed the online mode in this version of Initial D: Extreme Stage which means you won’t compete in live networked racing or get access to the downloadble cars. The plus side is the Asian version has an English language manual for easier operation. I can understand Sega nixing the digital manga downloads due to licensing issues, but cutting online play is a strange move since Initial D: Extreme Stage doesn’t even have a split screen two player mode. At least Play-Asia is selling this for less than half the price of the Japanese version. Is online play worth an extra $40 to you?

it's a tough call. i've been debating this one all day. i don't think i could hang with most of the online players, nor do i think the connection to japan would be so hot. i'll probably just snag this edition for less.

Reading across forums there apparantly is a lot of lag despite it appearing to be running fine. You've also got the case where someone "drops" from a race (not on purpose)and magically appears right in front of you the next moment.

Personally, it's ok. I'd rather pay the extra (I did!) to ocassionally play online, have access to the downloadable content instead of getting bored of single player. Once you finish all you have left is Time Attack (and avatar items if you like). Not even a split screen option, something that should be standard in every racing game.

Ugh I bought this at full price not even a month ago. Still this makes a huge difference. I can't imagine that the Japanese version has enough to justify $40 more.
