At E3 Nintendo unveiled their TV top microphone accessory at their press conference. We know the device is called WiiSpeak now, but between the days of July 2 - 4 Nintendo went on a trademark registration spree in Japan. They registered Wii to Wii, Wii2Wii, WiiFriend, WiiTalk, and WiiSpeak separately. Don’t get your hopes that WiiTalk is going to be a Skype-like channel. While these could be related to different products it’s more likely that at least some of these trademarks were other names Nintendo was considering for WiiSpeak.
WiiFriend is the odd one in the group since it can't be interchanged with WiiSpeak. It’s easy to imagine WiiFriend being related to a universal buddy list or something of that nature even though Nintendo hasn’t announced anything like that at the moment.

Potential for Universal Buddy List sounds interesting..
I could use a single place where I can have access to the friend codes of all my different Wii games.
If they’re trying to make the Wii some kind of all-in-one entertainment center, Nintendo is taking far too much time for it.

Nintendo + Universal Buddy List = many things…..like
1. Hell freezing over
2. Me actually believing in God
3. Michael Jackson is innocent.
4. Penn & Teller actually will get a brain between the two of them.
