@Daizyujin - yeah, cheaper certainly makes more sense since we're getting just the contents and not the media. The movie rental/purchase is even worse. It's the "one click away" that gets you.

Warhawk is $30 now as a greatest hit. I saw they just put up Jeanne D'arc for $22.99, which is supposed to be cheaper than the $30 UMD, but the title is rather old and has since gone on sale for $20. But these games take up a lot of room on say a 4Gb memory stick, you would need to delete after playing and store them on your PS3, which also doesn't have unlimited space w/o upgrading your hard drive.

I guess I have no problem d/ling the cheaper games, like Ratchet and Bionic Commando Rearmed which are really worth it. For games like Siren or GT which are huge, definitely want them on Blu-Ray instead of d/ls.

At least Sony is getting it right by charging less for these games than the UMD versions. I feel that was the biggest error with both Warhawk and even more so with GT5:P in that the boxed versions were roughly the same price. I can't see paying the same amount for a downloaded game when I can get the UMD/DVD/Blu-Ray. Doctrine of First Sale rights apply to boxed copies after all.

@SteveJ

As for the iPhone uprooting the DS and PSP? Don't see it happening, at least not for DS. The markets are too different. I don't see too many 8 year olds with iPhones but they have plenty of DSs. Plus I don't know about everybody else but I am not too keen to having to sign a contract to get the phone and to have it activated just for the right to play a few games. That and I am on Verizon. :)

Downloadable games are certainly more convenient (just like CDs vs. mp3s), and they load faster, but they take up room on the hard drives which could add up, though not as bad a a 5 Gb movie rental.
I think I still prefer owning a more tangible physical copy w/ nice cover art, having the cheaper alternative is always nice, as long as they don't get rid of disc based games (maybe in the future..)

Sony and Nintendo have a lot more to worry about than each other in the portable gaming market - Apple is expecting to ship 40 million iPhone 3Gs by next August, and that doesn't include existing iPod Touches and first gen iPhones. I have to say that ever since the 2.0 firmware update to the iPod Touch I have barely touched my DS (I don't have a PSP). The iPod Touch is far more portable (it's always in my pocket and so always available), the games are inexpensive and can be purchased, downloaded and installed in minutes (and there are good free games too), you never swap cartridges or discs and always have all your games with you. Not to mention other things such as how easy it is to get online with the iPod touch - once you have connected to your WiFi network once, you connect to it automatically from then on, so bringing up the AppStore to see what's new is quick and easy. Also game (and other app) development is progressing at a really fast rate. Sony, with a handful of downloadable games (though at much higher prices), is stepping in the right direction, but if they don't hurry the transition up they (and Nintendo) are in for a shock IMHO.
