Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix still lives, still coming out this year

With all of the talk about Street Fighter IV it’s easy to forget Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix even exists. Summer is almost over and the PlayStation Network / Xbox Live Arcade remake is likely to miss its summer 2008 release window. What’s going on with the project? Rey Jimenez, Associate Producer at Capcom, tells the Street Fighter Blog, “We are in the home stretch. We’re basically closing out all the bugs that came up in the open beta and a few other open issues… We’re on track to release the game this year and barring any unforeseen catastrophic event, that should not be changing.”

A “catastrophe” would be if Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix didn’t get released this year and Street Fighter IV came out before it.

i feel like it’s already a catastrophe. they were supposed to update the graphics. that was all. now, the project has gone well beyond all projected release dates, and some folks are finding that balancing a game takes a lot of work. this should have been out ages ago. if i were a higher-up at capcom, i’d be docking someone’s pay and/or pushing just the graphically overhauled ssf2t out the door.

That is probably the first time I’ve ever heard anyone criticize Capcom for not rushing a product to market with negligible gameplay differences from previous versions. I mean, hasn’t this pretty much been an issue with most street fighter/ megaman/ resident evil releases for the last generation or so?

The problem is that since they missed the summer release window, when it finally does get released, it is going to be lost in a sea of all the games that are coming out this fall. Think about it, NBA 2K9, Midnight Club LA, Saints Row 2, Dead Space, Fable 2, Guitar Hero WT, Little Big Planet and Fallout 3 are out in October alone. November brings even more titles like Gears of War 2, Call of Duty 5, Prince of Persia etc. and that is just to name a few.

  • If SST 2 is released after ST4, it will probably be a bonus download not a standalone game. Who would pay for it?

the game was finished in 1994. this was meant to be a visual touch-up. the game wasn’t broken; it should not have been “fixed.” it should not have been rebalanced. moves should not have been changed. that’s why i, in a very unusual twist, complain that they did not push the product out the door and tell sirlin to forget all that unnecessary nonsense.

You will be able to play the very same game as you played in 1994. Simply choose to play a “Classic” game, rather than the “Remixed” mode.
