No One Wants Your Used Metal Gear Solid 4 In Japan

Tsutaya Shinjuku is having a fire sale on used copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 where you can buy a pre-owned copy for a mere 2,480 yen. Even with the economic downturn that’s still only $24.50. A brand new copy at the same store goes for 6,980 yen ($69), a break from Konami’s suggested retail price of 8,800 yen ($88). Oh, and if you’re planning to sell your copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 don’t bother in Shinjuku.

Only 500 yen ($5) after four months?! That’s less than a bowl of ham and butter ramen. And I thought Gamestop prices were bad…

Just for a fair comparison the same store will pay you 3,800 yen ($38) for Compile Heart’s recent Cross Edge, 1,200 yen ($12) for Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, and 2,500 yen ($25) for Animal Crossing: Wild World which is almost three years old.

The one great thing about used video games in Japan (at least from my experience) is that their "used" would be equivalent to our "pristine, like new condition". Not the sort of thing that Gamestop gives you.. scratched and beat up.
  • Speaking of Gamestop, I think they're selling used MGS4 copies for around $45-$50.
That's an interesting price gap in Japan. It's still going to be a while before I actually play the game myself.

the potential userbase is too small.

Yikes, I wish I have a contact in Jpn to get me cheap used games. I imported the Limited Edition on day 1 and it cost me like $110, now a new LE copy is on sale for ~$60.

Are you in Jpn now Spence? Do you see any cheap copies of Vesperia, Operation Darkness, and Infinite Undiscovery? These are all games I would like to play on my Jpn 360, but they cost so dang much like $70 each :(.. I want Persona 4 also..

If games' price fall that much after only 4-5 months, I will endure and wait.. Regardless, MGS4 was a great game though, I didn't regret buying it at full price. I really had no idea MGS was such a niche title..
