Sega Japan Passing On PS2 Sonic Unleashed

By Spencer . October 27, 2008 . 12:25pm

sonicu In North America and Europe Sonic Unleashed is exploding on every viable console on the market with a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 2 version that Japan isn’t getting. Sega of Japan plans to release Sonic: World Adventure (renamed to better fit Sonic’s journey around the Earth and downplay the Werehog thing?) only on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. The PlayStation 2 port will be completed before Sonic: World Adventure launches in Japan so this begs the question why is Sega passing on it? It’s not like Sega Japan is abandoning the PlayStation 2 entirely. Thunderforce VI comes out on Thursday in Japan and unless Sega has anything secretly planned it will be the final PlayStation 2 game published by Sega in the region.

I wonder of the PS2/Wii versions will still use Renderware? Secret Rings and Sonic 06 still did, and the Hedgehog Engine's been said to be for 360/PS3 only... actually, I wonder if Black Knight will use RW too?

that version (PS2) shouldn't even exist in the first place, it is an insult that us, wii owners have to put up with PS2 geometry and textures these days, and not representative of the platform. Wii should instead be the leading platform for the PS3/X360 versions who might I add, is nothing out of this world regarding geometry; we're talking about a version that could sell more on the Wii than both combined so really, why cutting costs and going with a lower denominator like PS2?

Black Knight probably uses renderware. This? hmmm, looks way worse than secret rings.

Insult? LOL! You're late to the party. Nintendo doesn't care as long as it sells! Not should Sega. In fact I wouldn't be mad at Sega if they decided to play the same card Nintendo did. After all the Dreamcast and Gamecube were largely unappreciated.

Maybe they're still holding a grudge about the whole Dreamcast thing? :/

Pulsar this is not a Dreamcast port like say... Shenmue, who'd be welcome, it's a new game whose lower denominator is not the wii, but a much inferior 10 year old console who always had problems with textures and stuff, we don't deserve those problems, so yeah, it's an insult, and something nintendo never did or will.

So you think it's more of an insult to the Wii owners that they get this game with worse textures than what it would be to PS2 owners if they wouldn't get this game at all?

Also, if the WII would be the leading platform for PS3/360, wouldn't that be an insult against them then?

It would be a new game whose lower demoninator would be neither PS3 nor 360, but a much inferior console who has much less recources than both the PS3/360?

Why would it be an insult for PS2 not to get a new game at this point?

As for the X360/PS3 version of this game... actually not at all, sure, it's not something that happens often, but this game isn't doing nothing on the HD consoles that the Wii couldn't handle, search for when it was unveiled and from certain techniques at place, like cardboard bushes some people even thought it was a Wii game, and it could be a Wii game easily. And low expectations won't get you anywhere on any platform.

But you just proved your point wrong mate, so the Wii being a leading platform is not insulting for those platforms (aparently just the sound of it is, for you) but the Wii version having to take the crap from PS2 is not? LOL! let alone the fact that we're judging based solely on how good it looks for the hardware and what's going on in there... and obsviously PS2 16 color textures and low poly geometry is more than insulting, it's downright stupid for a approach to a market leader who, incidentally, is way more powerfull.

And still, I didn't say that they "couldn't" have made a PS2 version, they could put another team doing it... just not the same, never the same and specially not done as they did. Two months ago this game on the Wii didn't even have shaders applied, it was just the PS2 build and just now they're adding them, at the very least they should have made it for the Wii as a lead platform and then downgrade it until it runs, not the oposite which they did.

    good ridance.

Don't we already know about this when Sega Japan announced the title a few months ago?
