FFVIII is one of the best Final Fantasy games. It has an innovative battle/stat system, a great story, wonderful music, and is extremely well balanced.It's a shame that FFIX came after that, and, based purely on nostalgia for the art style, everyone ignored its numerous and crippling shortcomings (load times, battle load times, inability to run, absolutely rote battle system, more on-rails-than-normal story progression), and praised it to the heavens often in the same breath as insulting FFVIII.
