Persona 4: FES Final Maniax Edition Not Happening

By Spencer . November 7, 2008 . 7:55am

Persona 4: FES Final Maniax Edition Not Happening Companies like Square Enix and to a lesser extent Atlus re-release games with expanded content. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3: FES came out half a year after Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. So is the same thing going to happen with Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4?

Atlus says no way. In what might be a first for any publisher, Atlus sent us an anti-announcement stating there will be one and only one version of Persona 4 which is scheduled to come out on December 9. It is strange to hear a publisher close their doors to a follow up before a game even launches, but Atlus also wants to assuage fears that a deeper version won’t be coming out in the future. If you want the “best” version of Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 pre-order it at Gamestop or Amazon to bonus the 100 page art book.

Not even Persona 4 Wii? :O

Anyway, this is sort of good news, sort of… because… well, I like my games complete and that ensues that nothing was left out for a directors cut, but on the other hand I didn’t mind paying for P3 FES so… yeah.

FES was my first exposure to the Shin Megami Tensei series. At least I don’t have to wait for anything, which I guess is the point here.

James, I couldn’t recomend you more the original P3 though, if only because of the hardcase, artbook and soundtrack.

Atlus really got it right with Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES, making FES cheaper, although we could argue that Persona 3 was too cheap for what it was already (not that I am complaining, quite the oposite).

But from a ideal business perspective if I were them I’d really go with P3+extras for $60 (and this is already a quite generous price considering competition prices without extras) and then do P3 FES for $40. Although, since it was on PS2 and in 2007/2008 I believe their pricing was spot-on… but still… I mean, the game is worth more than that ^_^’ (I’m going through some kind of contraction in this comment really, in one hand of course the cheaper the better, but it’s just that in comparison with other games, seeing 6 hour games at full price and a game like persona coming out at a budget price… it’s gotta be worth more than that)

I’m actually amazed at how many people were introduced to SMT through persona 3. It’s always a good thing for the series to have fans, means we probably won’t miss out on future titles.
Persona 4 being a standard release is pretty good news, even if there was a FES version announced I’d still pick this up at launch though.

    @Geoff

Slap a few stylish anime designs and a dating sim and expect a whole rainbow of animephiles throwing bills at you. I just hope this doesn’t mean other MegaTen games follow suit and start getting the same braindead teen angst treatment.

Don’t you forget us old folk, Atlus.

^ hmmm, persona was always about teenagers. Unless you’re also putting Persona 2 in that equation, since it dates back to the old folk I guess.

Still I’d say it’s pretty solid and well outside of the “teenager rage” and “existence doubts” that plage j-RPG’s these days (for one, the main character is mute, thank god); I really don’t care about their age as long as they aren’t too kiddy looking (ie: looking 14 years old) and well… don’t act like a bunch of retards (which happens in most RPG’s unfortunately) but not in Persona ones. So I must say that I’m thrilled for Persona 4.

Dating sim… well it sure makes it a streamlined RPG ideal to attract the masses but that’s also part of it’s charm. it’s optional anyway, and in Persona 4 you can choose at a certain point the kind of relation that you have with them, friendship or… dating. So efectively you can max out all social links without dating anyone, isn’t that addressing both the people that like the dating part as the people who don’t?

On the plus side, the social link acts as character development, something other games utterly fail at and feel hollow due to it.

Personally, I’m sort of glad to hear this. I’d rather a developer put all its efforts into a great, polished single release than to do the normal practice of money-gouging remakes, remixes, ports or creating trilogies.

Cause P4 is going to be awsome that it doesn’t need a FES. By the way I haven’t played P3, but now I’am finally coming back to the series since Persona 1&2 PS1.

Call me cynical, but there probably will be a “special edition” released later on.

But that’s okay. I just won’t buy it. And hopefully no one else will. Companies should not be able to profit from outright lies. But they can, because lame ass anime fans will buy anything 4 times over.
