Sega Delaying PS3/X360 Sonic Unleashed To Improve Quality, But Only In Japan (Update)

By Spencer . November 10, 2008 . 8:23am

sonicps3 Something strange is going on with Sonic Unleashed, better known as Sonic World Adventure in Japan. Instead of coming out on December 18th Sonic Unleashed won’t be released on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 in Japan until spring 2009. The official Sonic World Adventure page explains the extra time will be used to further improve the quality of the game. Meanwhile, the Wii version isn’t affected and the Night of the Werehog T-shirt in Sega’s Winter campaign is still valid.

But, wait a minute Sonic Unleashed is scheduled to ship on every console under the sun, including the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, next week in North America.

So, is Sega USA going to announce a last minute delay? Or is Sega Japan getting a retooled version of Sonic Unleashed?

Update: We contacted Sega USA and are still waiting on a response, but Eurogamer has one from Sega Europe which cites manufacturing and sales issues to be the source of the delay, not quality issues. This response is conflicting with information directly from Sega Japan’s Sonic World Adventure webpage which explains the delay is to improve the quality of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Thoughts?

OT, but I really wish they’d have called it “World Adventure” overseas too.

I wonder if the delay is to correct the supposed slowdown in the PS3 sku? Seems weird that they’d bump back the 360 rev too though… maybe they’re just giving Wii a JP time exclusive? They did the same with Sonic Heroes on GC iirc?

  • Yea, that was the first thought that popped into my head. Sega and Nintendo have been really close of late. Sega might be to Nintendo what Team Ninja was to Microsoft.

Wii getting a well-timed exclusive in Japan wouldn’t surprise me at all. Perhaps because the Wii doesn’t really have very many big titles (Aside from the long-legged ones) coming out this fall?

Then again, what do PS3/360 have in Japan this fall that could take away Sonic’s thunder?

Ishaan I disagree, first off, the Wii version of this game didn’t get any sort of preferential treatment when it comes to the final product, quite the contrary and given the Japanese userbase… a simultaneous release in Japan would no doubt benefit the Wii version already, so I see no need to do this.

So if anything I’d say either they do not want to release both games at the same time due to the fact it wouldn’t even be a contest, that or they really need that time and are rushing out the game outside Japan for christmas and thus, Japan will have a better end product (that or, by the time the Japanese version launches the others will have patches)

Sonic has been selling less and less in Japan too, so I doubt it can be considered a title with real weight there. On the other hand, PS3 has White Knight Chronicle and X360 has Last Remnant’s timed exclusivity, both higher profile than a Wii title that didn’t even get the treatment it should (was outsourced, and they did the assets with PS2 in mind).

Why don’t you (Spencer) ask Sega what going on rather then just posting this? Honestly I would really like to know.

  • Spencer

We’re already asked Sega and are waiting on a reply. At this time they didn’t get back to us.

Well, I don’t they’ll come up front and explain on the expense of saying something like “we’re rushing the HD versions for Q4 2008 in US/Europe” before actually launching them, even more so if that is the case might I point out.

If that’s what they’re doing, that is. Nothing wrong with asking though.

  • A couple of weeks ago I reported on my website ( that the game was being delayed in Australia until December 27th which is a date appearing on some retail sites. Sega denied the claim in the last week, but retailers often beat the PR people when it comes to dates. Could that have been the first sign of a delay… now confirmed for Japan at least.

I posted this up on the Sega boards Sega Europe states that Sonic Unleashed will release (in Europe) on November 28 for 360, PS2 and Wii with the PS3 version to follow in mid December. Though I would still like official word from Sega America before I go counting those chickens. Any further updat on this Spencer?
