Cosplay Used To Push Mirror’s Edge In Japan

Old news for us, but Mirror’s Edge just launched in Japan. EA decided to promote the game by having someone dress up as Faith in Shibuya nighttime hotspot Womb. The person in the picture is Natsuki Kato who isn’t a stranger to cosplay or video games. She was a guest at the world cosplay summit and did a commercial for Super Robot Taisen Alpha. A good figurehead choice by EA, but they should have given Kato the wig they used in Italy so she looked more like Faith.

EA also has some did some cool looking building displays with vertical running and Faith gazing over people. Very neat stunts, but will things like this really sell Mirror’s Edge? Japanese commenters sound like they have mixed feelings about Faith’s character design.

Gee, it's like the 2chan moe-fication of Faith given flesh. Maybe Japan will buy the game now.

Funny, those Japanese commenters are about as bad and stereotypical as what you'd typically see on youtube and gametrailers, although it looks like whoever hand-picked those comments only picked the most controversial to pull in more views and ad revenue.

Surely there are some sensible Japanese comments in the mix.

well, this is proof that the character design had her looking rough and tumble for a reason. ms. kato doesn't appear to be the type to so much as climb over the living room couch when her favorite show comes on, much less the type to scale buildings and slide-steal guns from firing enemies.

I can see how Faith's design could be unappealing to Jpn and other Asians, just like Nariko from Heavenly Sword (who looks like Asian and black at the same time). I don't think it has anything to do w/ Moe, but they just look unattractive and stereotypical Asian even if they were trying to go for the realistic tough female look. She doesn't have to look anime-ish, at least her design shouldn't turn people away since she's the main character. For example, Lucy Liu is not pretty at all, many Asian actresses are much prettier than her, but she's seen as good looking in the US, people seem to think she represents Asian beauty. Whether she has class is a different matter.

I love Heavenly Sword and am interested in this game, but if the female leads look a little better, it would be much better to look at aesthetically.

I sort of cringed the first time I saw the character design for Faith (in that trailer where it zooms out to show her face) thinking it was lame, but I can definitely see how the whole half-asian thing works comparing these photos to the Italian models.

    Womb is a wicked club.

thaKingRocka has obviously not seen Battle Royale 2 (she plays a fairly badass sniperin that). And at least she appears to be a game fan; http://kotaku.com/gaming/famitsu/japanese-actre...

unlike some of the clueless tools we get advertising games in the UK.
