Space Invaders Get Another Trippy Evolution

After thirty years of classic Space Invaders, Taito is melding Space Invaders with other genres. Space Invaders: Infinity Gene takes the franchise and turns it into something Taito should have thought of years ago: a full scale vertical shooter.

 

You aren’t a turret tethered to the ground in Space Invaders: Infinity Gene. You control a ship that flies and you have to fly to dodge bouncing lines. There are big boss battles too like a giant battleship and the retro meets Rez style looks fantastic. Too bad Space Invaders: Infinity Gene is only in development for mobile phones only in Japan. An iPhone port would be great, but Space Invaders: Infinity Gene looks like the kind of game Taito could expand into an Xbox Live Arcade or DSiWare title too.

    Now I love my Space Invaders — but does anyone else notice a rather large similarity to the totally bad ass indie game Genetos. I’d still certainly buy it if it were to arrive on any system over here that I own.
