Siliconera Speaks Up: What are you playing?

By Louise Yang . January 4, 2009 . 8:53am

Many people are lucky enough to have winter break from school or a vacation from their jobs. Cold weather is like Mother Nature’s way of telling us to stay inside, bundle up, and spend some time gaming. What are you playing during your winter break?

Jenni: This winter break I’ll mainly be catching up. I’ll (hopefully) finish up my first playthrough of Persona 4 and finally finish my first playthrough of La Corda d’Oro for the PSP. I’m also going to be spending a little bit of time each day paying off loans and creating a perfect town in Animal Crossing: City Folk.

A friend of mine recently picked up Guitar Hero III for the Wii, and I’m sure at her Holiday and New Years Eve parties I’ll take part in some guitar battles or duets.

Spencer: The nice part about early January is you can catch up with the holiday surge. I want to spend more time with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. It’s a fun game, but it came out around the same time as so many other games I haven’t given it as much attention. Part of the reason is you can play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom for half an hour and put it down without having to worry about reaching the next save point. The pick up and play style is nice, but since Tatsunoko vs. Capocm doesn’t force you into a timesink I haven’t put tons of time into it.

I also have Ar Tonelico II lying around that I haven’t gotten to. Don’t worry you’ll hear about it soon! And then there’s KORG DS-10 which isn’t a game, but a cool music program to play with. It’s really technical though so learning to use it is “the game”. I should probably get to Infinite Undiscovery too. I started it, but put it down. Actually, should I get back to it? Is it worth my time?

Louise: Thanks to the BF being out of town, I finally have the time to devote hours upon hours to my current game of choice: Persona 4. It really is the type of game where you need a chunk of time to play because once I start, I don’t want to stop. It’s always, “Ok, just one more floor” or “Just let me get to the next day so I can develop my S. Link with so-and-so more.” The only “breaks” the game has are when you defeat a story boss early and you have to wait for the next event to show up; those are the only times I turn off my PS2 to take a break.

When I’m taking a break for P4, I play my 360. Winter break means more of my Xbox Live friends are on during the day, so I usually join them for a game of Left 4 Dead or Gears of War 2. I prefer playing these games with people I know instead of being at the mercy of random matching. Most of the players I get matched up with with random matching make me wonder why I’m paying for the online service at all.

    I’m playing Namco X Capcom this weekend. My XBoX 360 RROD’ed ><…

  • Izludicus

Working on Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden by day, and then Persona 4 by night when I get the TV.

  • Reflect

I am working my way with DJMAX Trilogy/Black Square and Dragon Ball Origins.

  • Advent

Currently playing: Animal Crossing City Folk, Mario Kart Wii, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Zelda Majora’s Mask, Persona 4, Digital Devil Saga, and Phantom Hourglass.

This might take a while… lol!

  • Currently enjoying Persona 3, try to like DBZ Infinite World and plug my old PS1 again to play One Piece Ocean’s Dream, an old RPG.

  • Kay

Persona 4 has been sucking up my entire break. I haven’t been able to get anything done because of just how addicting it is. School life in the game reminds me of my undone homework.

  • Going up the ranking list in Senko no Ronde (anyone who calls it WarTech will sadly have to be put down) and trying to get 505 Games to release Culdcept Saga in Europe so I can play that too.

Seriously though, anyone who can send 505 Games a message ( ) saying you’d love to see Culdcept Saga in europe will have my eternal gratitude. I contacted them before and they seemed interested if enough people showed interest! It’s probably the ONLY way PAL-gamers will ever get to play that wonderful game…

Ok, enough trying to get help, enjoy your weekend people :)

  • Volcynika

You have Ar Tonelico 2 and haven’t played it? Bad Spencer!

Anyways! Finished Persona 4 before the end of 2009, so now I just have to beat Aquaria, Mirror’s Edge time trials, Fallout 3, Valkyria Chronicles (I’m very slow to finish this game), World of Goo, and sneak some Left 4 Dead here and there. Too much to do!

  • superdry

I just beat Persona 3 the day before new years. And, right after that, I started to play The Answer in FES to finish up the Persona 3 story. It’s gotten pretty addicting. I’ll be clearing dungeon levels and next thing I know it’s 4am.

  • Enflict

Mostly been playing Dissidia, DJ Max Black Square, and Left 4 Dead. But yesterday I really had an urge to play UT2004 and reinstalled the whole game with all the old mappacks and mods.

  • Mr. Mee

I’m currently on Final Fantasy XII, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Tales of Legendia, and Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

  • Nekobo

Slowly playing Persona 4 and the new Prince of Persia in between. Still have a huge RPG backlog, so I won’t need to buy any new games for the rest of winter…

  • Leafpanda

Persona 4, Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden (ugh it’s so slow), Super Robot Wars W, Also i need to finish Persona 3 still haven’t gotten to that and I already started P4 =P

  • fallen

@ Advent: That’s weird – I’ve been playing through Majora’s Mask as well. I just can’t get over how great of a game it is. I like to play as much as I can with the time slowed down in the Evening of the Final Day so I can listen to that super-moody music while I’m helping cute little monkeys find their loved ones.

  • Eliel

currently playin Disgaea 2&3, Fall out 3 Persona 3 fes, and sum

  • shion16

    Ive finished Dissidia
Now im playing No more heroes for wii and prinny for PSP

  • Clouds End

Playing Little Big Planet, Persona 3: FES, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper Max and Dissidia.

  • CriticalFury

I’m currently playing Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst(SCHTHACK Private SERVER). two awesome games i might say.

  • jeffx

P4 all the way but also a bunch of Wii games such as RE4, Tales, Opoona and Shikigami III. I may start a parallel game of Mother 3 (dunno how I’ll keep up)

  • Cielito

I’m playing Megaten Online and trying to get all the (DS) Chrono Trigerrs’ finals, it’s tedious but a hell of a fun!

  • Phantasy Star IV, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Fit.

I’ve also been trying some of the iPhone/iPod Touch games. With the exception of Rolando and Trism, I’m not very impressed. I think it’s similar to when the DS launched; people didn’t know how to develop for it. We’ll see if more quality titles come through in the next year.

  • Nick Doerr

Finished up Valkyria Chronicles, Persona 4, and Dead Space in the last week. All my friends are still in college, so after work, I’ve got nothing to do but play with pretend friends/dismembered aliens in the aforementioned games.

I’m running through Luminous Arc 2 and will probably try to suffer my way through Magna Carta or something. Honestly, I’ve finished all the “big” games I’ve anticipated, so I’ve got little on my must-play queue until Ar Tonelico 2 arrives in a few weeks.

  • I recently beat Luminous Arc, and am now trying to go through Luminous Arc 2 and hopefully level up my characters in time to participate in Atlus’ tournament.

Besides that, I’ve been playing a bit of DJ Max 2 while waiting on Black Square. I’ve also been playing a bit of SMT: Imagine (though my graphics card keeps dying on me), Mother, and Daigasso! Band Brothers DX.

  • Wow, so many people are playing multiple games at once. I always get confused when I’m in the middle of too many games. I’m glad to see all the Persona love too.

@Ironix: I started SMT:Imagine, but as soon as I got P4, I stopped playing. I may pick it up once I’m done with P4.

  • Chow

I’ve pretty much devoted all my time to Persona 4. I have somewhere in the range of ten or more PS3/PSP/NDS games on queue at the moment and could’ve started them before P4, but they’ll have to wait until I’m done with it. Though, I might play Moon when it comes out on NDS at the same time as P4.

  • Lord Gek

It’s still all about Shiren DS 2, Baby! I’ve long ago cleared the main story but, just as in Shiren 1, getting anywhere in “The Outskirts of Hell” (this game’s equivalent to Fay’s Final Puzzle) is a bitch. This actually ISN’T the final challenge of this game but to get onto any of the additional dungeons beyond this I need to clear the 30th floor.

  • Leafpanda

    @People playing Imagine
How do you guys like it so far? I started playing for awhile then stopped, its an okay game but for now its really laggy for my comp. I still can’t tell if its my comp or if its because its a beta. I know for sure once it hits release or even open beta that my comp will just not be able to play it.

  • agnistratus27

I finally beat Wild Arms XF and Bioshock and am waiting for a sequel to either!

  • SomeDude

I was laboring through Fallout 3 but I decided to give my PC a rest. Shot through Dead Space in a day, and I’m halfway through Zoids Assault now.

When I’m not on the 360, I’m battling those damn Kopins in the Luminous Arc 2 hot springs, and trying to get all the rare item drops in the new Castlevania.

Mattias: You’re really not missing out on anything by not having Culdecept Saga. That game is not only boring, it’s buggy. There’s a glitch (which came over to the US) with the die rolling that completely destroys the game.

  • Advent

@fallen – This is actually my sixth time playing through Majora’s Mask doing everything (all side quests).

I’m playing it on the Gamecube, I really wish they would put it on the Virtual Console. PLEASE!

  • Keriaku

Persona 4, though I didn’t get to much time over the break because of work/family.

I started up Luminous Arc 2, and I want to try Valkyria Chronicles.

Also, rereading Umineko no Naku Koro ni EP2: Turn of the Witch with my parents :D

  • Chow

I haven’t played Imagine for a while because I got fed up with my Internet cutting out every once in a while.

For Fallout 3, I’ve stopped playing that since a while before the PS3 Trophy patch came out. I’m not exactly sure what I’d be doing about it when I pick it up again, since I’m in the middle of the story, and have heard stories about not being able to save after loading up the pre-patch saves. Mind you, that’s what I heard the night of the original patch, and haven’t bothered to check up on it after.

  • I am also playing catch up right now. I’m finishing up Persona 3 (though I’ll still need to play the Answer) and Chrono Trigger. This afternoon I marathoned through about four ranks in No More Heroes, so that’ll be finished within the week. I’m also playing Persona 4 here and there (I’m currently in Yukiko’s Castle, so I’m just starting), but I want to finish P3 before I really jump into it.

I’ll also probably play some Super Mario Galaxy once I’m done with NMH.

On the PC side of things, I’m playing Left 4 Dead several times a week and a few “casual” games like Peggle Nights, Puzzle Quest, and Bejeweled Twist for when I’m listening to podcasts.

  • daizyujin

I currently have about 9 games in my to do pile but for the most part it is between Sonic Unleashed for PS3 and Animal Crossing: CF and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom on Wii.

  • Pesmerga00

I’m a one game at a time kind of guy. Also I usually finish a game before starting a new one(OCD).

I just started playing Blue Dragon, so far I’m enjoying it. It’s not the best game, and the story is not spectacular, but it has Charm. Definitely worth the 15$ I paid for it. I really like the exploration aspect of it, as there are tons of things to find.

After BD I will probably play The Last Remnant.

(You read this message….. 10 Gold)

  • Aoshi00

I wrote a long “to-do” list before Christmas but ended up deviated from that.. now playing..

    1) Riz-zoawd – the graphics and fairy tale world felt charming at first, but the on-path track ball running and DQ-like battles wears off the fun after a little while. I hope to finish it.

    2) Mass Effect – finally plunged myself into this WRPG, mind blown away by the huge galaxy world. I love the tons of RPG dialogue choices, but I suck at the shooting parts.

3)GTA 4 — too badass, just want to keep playing to move Niko up the rank of gangster

    4) Operation Darkness — the long battles and wonky camera makes me weary of “tackling” every new mission, dying after an hour is no fun.

You should keep playing Infinite Undiscovery Spence. At first I found it boring after the castle stage at the beginning, but it gets more fun later and I’m pretty far at the game now, just got side-tracked. I stopped P4 after saving Yukiko too since other games beckon.

  • piry311

P4 is taking a huge amount of my time but it’s worth it, I LOVE IT. Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Valkyria Chronicles, Ar Tonelico 2, Dissidia and Devil Summoner: Kuzunova vsking Abbadon are on hold

  • SomeDude: Interesting :o never heard of it but will look into it. From what I’ve played (at a frieds house, american 360) it’s a fantastic niche title. I do love any kind of virtual Collectable Card Game though :)

  • Dash

    – Burnout Paradise (on PS3, i got for xmas at an incredible price)
    – Team Fortress 2 (on PC)

  • nika

    so much P4 love!

i’m currently playing tales of the world and tales of eternia for the psp. and as always i sometimes spend a few hrs with kin’iro no corda and tokimeki memorial girls side.

i don’t own a PS3 or 360, and thanks to the vacation there is no chance to visit the friends i usualy play at.

  • Persona 4.
    DJMax Portable Claz/BlkSq.
    Street Fighter IV

  • I’m surprised by all the people playing P3. For all our readers playing it, did you start it because of P4? Or are you just trying to finish it up before diving into P4?
