Ready For A "Tokyo Beat Down"?

By Spencer . January 9, 2009 . 11:36am

Atlus is giving us one on March 10. Tokyo Beat Down is actually game we mentioned before when Success released under the name Yajuu Keiji, which literally translates to Beast Detective. In the US version Lewis Cannon and his team are known as the “Beast Cops” because they let their fists and guns do the talking.

Tokyo Beat Down has 3D graphics, but it plays like Final Fight with guns. The streets are littered with weapons like pistols, shotguns, submachine guns. All of these are at your disposal if you find them on the ground next to life restoring hamburgers.

Usually, I would carelessly flip through a story in a beat ‘em up, but Atlus promises Tokyo Beat Down is going to have “madcap humor and sharply-written dialogue” with an over-the-top 70′s cop show style. The story branches too with multiple endings to find which should give Tokyo Beat Down more replay value than other games in the genre. Sounds good to me, but I was already sold on Tokyo Beat Down months ago based on the campy vigilante detective setting.

    Can Atlus do any wrong?

    Oh wait. Onatamamaramaramatatarma.

Day one on this (along w/ Ys, Hammerin Hero and Dark Spire)

I just signed up to their newsletters as they have been pretty humourous, this game is a must buy for me aslong as it plays well!

  • Pichi

Hey, I love Ontamarama! Sucker for the music and character designs, lol!

Writing is good from what I’m seeing!

I’m with you, Big S. After seeing the trailer I just remembered about all those crazy Japanese dramas with the wacky cops.
That’s a good thing, especially if the gameplay gets a bit repetitive!

Campy, looks like a good old beat’em up w/ nice 3-D graphics.

But the import ver has been on sale for a while and doesn’t seem to be well received in Jpn, so I was hesitating whether to get it or not..

So the main character is the only guy w/ a changed Western name, Lewis Cannon? He looks like Liu Kang from Mortal Combat :)

  • Aoshi00

BTW, would this be at the $20 price range by any chance like Legend of Kage 2? Import’s org price tag is only 4,000 yen.

  • Spencer

    @Aoshi00 – Yeah I think this would have done better as a $20 game, it’s $29.99 here.

  • Ishaan

Oh my. Look at those 3D thighs in that last screenshot. I’m sold.
