See Sega Parody Mario In Pole’s Big Adventure

By Spencer . January 23, 2009 . 9:10am

Not only is Pole no Daibouken (Pole’s Big Adventure) designed like a lost Famicom game it pokes fun at gaming’s golden age. In these video clips we’re introduced to Pole, the pixilated 8-bit cowboy, who jumps and shoots in levels that have elements reminiscent of Super Mario Brothers. However, things like pipes and mushrooms don’t have the same effect in Pole’s Big Adventure. Seriously, watch out for those mushrooms!

Nostalgia overload right?

Pole’s Big Adventure can be played with the Wii remote held NES style or you can grab a Classic Controller or Gamecube controller. Pole’s Big Adventure supports these devices too. For a 500 Wii Points ($5) Pole’s Big Adventure looks like it’s worth it for me. I’m sold on the concept and the humor. Look for hands on coverage of this in two weeks time.

  • I would totally be up for NES 8-bit cowboy parody adventures, but this game looks like it was created for a high-res Atari 2600.

IMO, not reaching for at least C64 standards when it comes to graphics is just lazy.

This looks perfectly like an NES game but it still have things NES can't do like turning to giant.
you haven't played NES or atari since a while I think.
  • You're right, there are some non 8-bit special effects. But compare Pole's Adventure to this game for C64: http://www.richmace.co.uk/c64/images/creatures_...
It's not great, but it's more detailed and way less sloppy.

Maybe NES shovelware looked as bad as Pole's Adventure (you're right, I didn't play NES much haha) but Sega should be aiming higher than 1980's shovelware, don'cha think? Even if it is parody.

That's the thing though, it's not a matter of lack of ambition, it's a matter of... they wanted to make the game like this, as a throwback to retro days.

Think of it like Megaman 9, except this time they're making a tongue in cheek mario knock off. I think it's a game specifically for Super Mario bros actually, because we are used to it, we'll run after those mushrooms nonetheless and get mislead by stuff (pipes show the same concept) it's like a bastard approach to Mario bros, that goes against it.

I love it, I don't know if I'll buy it at launch but... more power to the developers of this. We're always complaining that Sega has lost it's edge, and only does Sonic and shitty friends and stuff... so I really feel things like this are fresh and worthwhile... not to mention that they show some creative liberty, which is very important, let's let these developers spread their legs.

looks awesome actually, love the tongue in cheek treatment

I guess the humor is lost on me. I get that it's a parody of sorts, but the gameplay looks terrible.

Indeed awesome. Definitely one for us old hands, though. Something like this is probably completely lost on the kids today.
  • If they can do this, I can't wait to see what else they have in store for WiiWare! :o
  • Mandew
I could hardly call that humorous. Unless they program different effects for those mushrooms, because I found the sudden giant growth a bit predictable and it didn't amuse me the first time. For the rest, the game doesn't have much to sell itself for now. At least, not that they've shown or I understood. I would bet an experienced Game Maker user could make a similar game.

Haha, wow @ the castle and the fireworks at the end of the stage.

    Retro is soooo raaad.

    Harshhh
  • Nika
    ahahaha, I like it.
not enough to buy it, but the idea is great.

I love that they are taking this 8 bit spoof revival seriously in the game industry. Looks like a decent silly game :)
  • Looks interesting. Hopefully there are a few more surprises than those shown in the videos.
  • Mazen
Sold, I will be there the first second it launch.
