Atlus Retooling Persona, Growlanser For PSP

By Spencer . February 4, 2009 . 2:00am

imageIn April the Shin Megami Tensei spinoff that kicked off the Persona series is coming to the PSP. Famitsu says the game is a “remake”, but it looks more like a tweaked port a la Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War.

Atlus is adding new animated cutscenes to Persona and it looks like the battle interface took a cue from Persona 3 with floating heads as status icons. Dungeons appear to have more status information too, but they retain the first person viewpoint like older Shin Megami Tensei games. Persona is scheduled to come out in Japan on April 29. Of course, it’s too early for Atlus USA to announce Persona PSP, but if they do (and why shouldn’t they?) we should get an intact version of Persona with the Snow Queen plot.

Growlanser is also getting the PSP port up treatment for its tenth anniversary. New features include additional characters like Amelia and routes to follow. Since we never got Growlanser this game will be entirely new for us if Atlus USA picks it up. Japan gets it first though on May 14.

Awesome. I hope Atlus USA picks up both games. I really want to play the first Growlanser game.

I wonder who they got to do the ports. They look alright, would’ve preferred a remake for Persona but a rebalanced port will do.

  • Hello Hello

Oh wow. I’d really like to see Growlanser for the PSP. (I’d also like to see Growlanser VI, which seems to be never coming to North America…)

The first Persona is somewhat crappy game, regardless of translation issues. Growlanser in English would totally hot, though – hopefully Atlus picks it up. Shin Megami Tensei games are pretty much the only decent ones they’ve released recently…

Dammit. And I JUST sold my PSP to pay for Eye Surgery. Blast it All

Persona PS1 and PSP games? art. again!
Harvest Moon: Back To Nature? did. 0_O
    Final Fantasy VII?? Wow!!

I like, I like. Atlus is going to have a kick ass year. :)

*waits for the eventual Atlus USA announcement*

We need BOTH! Those are prime Q4 candidates, given the usual 6 month delay.

sign me in for this one, I never finished the original one due to the original translation (and lacking the snow queen quest) but I’ll definitely pick this one up.

Seems like a port alright though, so hopefully they’ll bump the character avatars and stuff up to persona 2 level and do away with the first person parts so the game doesn’t look as old… hopefully.

Never liked Persona 1 but Growlanser 1 is supposed to be great so hopefully it will get picked up.

I’m excited for this, but a little doubtful. After the wonderfulness of P4, a port of P1 is going to feel very dated. I hope the story is good enough to keep players going.

I’m fine with 1st person dungeons, I just hope they do a little retooling of the slow battle system. Just add the option to “rush”, like in P3 and P4. S’all I’d need.

Looking good. P1 is actually my favorite in the series.

I bet Atlus USA is chomping at the bit to retranslate it too…

When I read the first paragraph,I thought you meant SMT: If… and I was excited, but then I found out you meant Persona. Though I guess this’ll be pretty awesome too.
