Way before Shin Megami Tensei came to the West Atlus localized a little game from their parent company known here as Power Instinct. It came out in the early ’90s when fighting games were hot. Now that 2D fighting games are working their way back into arcades Atlus announced a sequel, Goketsuji Ichizoku: Senzo Kuyou, set to come out in the summer.

Power Instinct differentiated itself from Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat by being plain bizarre. Their characters included a guy in a dog suit and an old lady that spits out her dentures. From the early artwork both of them return in the revival. New characters in the follow up include Takumi, a kid wearing a gas mask, and Rin who shows off her moves in fights with classic characters in the clip below.

  • Ah, so Range Murata was responsible for the new character designs. That’s good!
I remember the arcade game that’s supposedly very rare here, and all that crazy music from Matrimelee like Let’s go! Onmyoji.

i actually like how they kinda glide across the floor. their footsteps don’t match up with the distance they are covering, yet it still looks very smooth in every regard.

i thought snk owed the power Instinct franchise

Looks like the sprites are recycled from the NeoGeo/PS2 Power Instinct Matrimelee with some 3D thrown in…
