Ogre Battle Wages War In The West

Between all the Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy games we got a quality release that should keep you busy until the next major retro RPG. Square Enix put Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen on the Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points ($8).

First released on the Super Nintendo and later ported to the PsOne, Ogre Battle has warriors fighting against an evil empire. While the plot sounds cliche, Ogre Battle makes use of a unique real time strategy meets classic RPG combat system. It’s different from your run of the mill grid based strategy RPG and has multiple endings to find. The Super Nintendo cartridge was quite a rarity so it’s a good thing Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen is getting a digital re-release.

My friend gave this to me as a birthday gift, and I can’t wait to sit down with it, since I never had a copy growing up. I just hope they can somehow get through all the hoops to put Person of Lordly Caliber on the Virtual Console, loved that game.

  • Nice. Grabbed this when it was re-released on the PlayStation. It’s good stuff, though virtual console folk win out with a version not garbled up with load times. Not that they were particularly bad in the PS version, but you know. Zero is infinitely less than one.

I’m glad to see this is finally being released here. This game is my only cartridge for my SNES that isn’t in like new condition because the only spot I could find it was a rental store when they were selling all of their SNES games. Now I just need to find time to play it.

I can’t forgive Ogre Battle for not giving you direct control over your characters.
