Which Characters Are In The Dragonball Evolution Game?

Saw Dragonball Evolution yesterday. As expected, it’s nothing like Dragonball. With only a few fight scenes the question in my mind after “why did I go to a theater to watch this” is how is the Dragonball Evolution fighting game going to work?

Namco Bandai hasn’t said much about it, but one screenshot has a character count. The PSP game has at least eleven selectable characters. The movie has seven lead roles: Goku, Bulma, Chi Chi, Master Roshi, Yamcha, Mai, and Piccolo. All of them are confirmed characters. That leaves four free slots. One of them will probably go to Grandpa Gohan who trains Goku. Master Mutaito could be another character even though he is in the movie for all of five minutes. Even if those characters are in there are still two more spaces which can go to generic monsters created by Piccolo, an alternate Goku, or one of Goku’s high school bullies.

From the screenshots it looks like Namco Bandai’s Dragonball Evolution game sticks to the source material closely so I wouldn’t expect any anime cameos. Yamcha uses a jackhammer in the movie and he uses a jackhammer in the game.

It’s like Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game all over again.

  • Aoshi00

The movie poster makes me cringe and I have a feeling this isn’t even worth the matinee admission.

However, being a huge DB/Toriyama fan for life, I think I would still brace myself to watch this abomination when it hits DVD via Netflix. The Chun-Li movie I have no interest whatsoever after seeing Vega in the trailer..

Still can’t get over Chow Yun-Fat being Roshi.. Bulma looks so hot though..

    • daizyujin

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Chow Yun-Fat used to be so awesome doing movies like Hardboiled. Makes you wonder what the hell happened.

      • Aoshi00

Yeah, I used to worship the man, he was so cool in “A Better Tomorrow”. Well, he’s in his 50′s now, so he probably figures what the hell, he’d get what he can. Still, you would think they would get an old-timer for Roshi and he’s far from old.

I wonder if the movie is “good” in a campy sort of way like Street Fighter in hindsight, or just bad altogether. The PSP game just reminds me of Mortal Combat because of the realistic character model.. I can’t be but be curious being a DB fan, lol..

Actually, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I went in expecting to laugh and I laughed a lot. The only regret I had was not seeing it at the 4D theater in Hong Kong which has fans, smoke and things like that synchronized with the movie. There were lots of parts that could have been fun since the Kamehameha is explained as an air bending technique.

          • Aoshi00

You saw the movie in HK? I guess it had Chinese subtitles then? I would pay extra to experience the cool effect of smoke and smell coming out of the seat.
To this day I still haven’t seen any movies in IMAX. I might be tempted to go catch this on a matinee next weekend, which isn’t too cheap anymore ($7.75). Like my obligation as a life time Dragonball fan :)

          • daizyujin

Hope you like it man, I think I am just going to wait for it to come out on DVD. I can’t imagine it is worth throwing down the cash to see in a theater with all the unwatched DVDs I have anyways. That being said, this isn’t the first live action Dragonball movie is it? I could swear I remember a really crappy low budget HK flick that somebody gave me an old VHS of back in the mid to late 90s.

          • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Saw it in HK with Chinese subtitles and the original voices. IMAX movies are pretty fun if they have good special effects!

The 4D theater actually costs the same amount as a regular ticket in HK which is still cheaper than a US movie. It’s just way out in the middle of nowhere next to the airport. I wish I made the trek though just for the experience.

        • daizyujin

I quit bothering with any anime/game related live action movies back in the late 90s. I actually sat through Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter The Movie, both Mortal Kombat films, and that god awful Double Dragon film. I can’t imagine that any of them have been much better.

The thing is there are some things that just work in animation that there is no way they could realistically come close to in live action. Dragonball strikes me as the perfect example of this. The only thing that would be worse is if they did a DBZ movie.

Actually I take that back. I had heard that a live action Smurfs film was in the planning stages. I don’t know if the world will ever be ready for that.

I knew that movie is gonna FLOP!
hahahaha. I’d rather watch that One piece and Dragon Ball crossover anime :)

  • maxchain

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Akkuman.

  • BlackFreefall

The movie is out already? Is not nice to judge a book by its cover but this one has epic failed written all over it.

  • Tye The Czar

Dragonball Evolution is the WAY more offensive thing coming from Fox-owning pig Murdoch than Fox “News” existence or that “Obama as a shot-up monkey” political cartoon in the New York Post, COMBINED.
