I don't think they've really revealed anything about DQX other than that it's going to be on Wii. Now, keep in mind that while I wouldn't recommend the Wii version of Echoes of Time to anybody, I do think there's potential for this Pollux Engine as far as cross-platform play is concerned.

What I'm thinking is that there has to be a way each version of the game can store the assets for both versions. Or to put it more precisely, substitute assets. That way, the game doesn't look out of place on either platform.

I thought there was some hubub about DQX going back to a more traditional 1p quest after DQIX's multiplayer experimentation? Or did you mean DQIX might get a Pollux-powered Wii release?

You don't need that many canned phrases, people online are creative enough to make their own. Example phrases i picked up from playing FFXI-

(Woman)(fun)(hole)(Do you need it?)

The japanese player youre talking to knows exactly what you mean... :)

“A similar system has already been utilized for Final Fantasy XI, and while there is no specific title we are working on at the moment, the importance of this type of system will surely increase with the continued development of games that connect on a global scale,” Kamiyama explains.

Dragon Quest X. Believe it. I'm convinced that's going to be built on the Pollux Engine (or an engine with the cross-platform ability of Pollux) to allow for cross-platform Wii/DS gameplay. They'd be nuts not to do it.

Yeah PSO used it, lots of games used it. FFCC: Echoes of Time isn't the first and won't be the last, but I wanted to see what Square Enix wanted to do with it in the future.

Sort of. I spoke to the Echoes of Time director about the system to see how it works to see how malleable it is. The next step up from canned phrases could be building a system with customizable canned phrases that can be swapped around.

Isn't that exactly what you wrote about 5 months ago?

http://www.siliconera.com/2008/12/10/final-fant...

Anyway, this whole "canned sentences" thing sucks. It makes for a very plastic experience, no different from playing against/with the computer. Eventually you grow bored of these preset choices and end up ignoring them.

It's an excellent system, and quite simple, too. It's not just about being able to play someone from half a world away. Us Euros have lots of different languages, and someone living a few hundred kilometers away will probably not understand you if you use your native tongue.

Voice chat wouldn't cut it, as many are not comfortable chatting in English. This also gets rid of the the swearing children of, say, Live. I wish more games would utilize systems like this.
