Ougon no Kizuna Evokes Memories Of Dynasty Warriors

Jaleco’s pencil shaded action RPG Ougon no Kizuna (Bonds of Gold) is almost done. This trailer gives us a good look at it and its like… Dynasty Warriors meets Shadow of the Colossus.

This video shows hero Lian slashing and summoning acid rain to dispatch dozens of cloned warriors. Swords have different spells so you want to collect them all. Famitsu explains the combat system is as simple as hitting A + A + A and mixing up the B button to do different attacks. The twist is Lian goes toe to toe against giant monsters like the Olugas in this clip. Not entirely new, but I’m interested to see if Jaleco captures the grand feel of Shadow of Colossus battles with Ougon no Kizuna.

Jaleco isn't known for their 3-D graphics right? Maybe they should have stuck to 2-D graphics for this game. *SHRUGS* This game has alot of potential (the character/monster designs and the music), but I know that it's going to fail in Japan and in the U.S (that's if it gets released in the u.s).

An I also know for sure that the 3-D graphic whores are going to rape this games visuals so hard. Look out for all the Playstation 2 visual jokes. Who knows, maybe Ougon no Kizuna will turn out to be good?

I don't want to pre-judge the game too much, but the trailer does leave me feeling a little underwhelmed. It looks like the kind of game that emphasizes hacking away at hordes of enemies and making your combo counter go ridiculously high. I mean, that's okay to a degree, but it sure would be nice to see more games like this that placed the emphasis on level design rather than combat.

The actual takedown of the giant didn't seem like it used the regular in-game engine like Shadow of the Colossus does. It seemed more QTE-based, like God of War when Kratos would take down a large creature.

Is this game supposed to be serious or tongue-in-cheek, all the trailers seem to poke fun at the title in some form or another.. Not to sound like a graphic whore, but the graphics do look underwhelming even by Wii's standard. Other than the giant boss, the hordes of identical goons remind me of Drakengard.

Couldn't find a lower quality trailer, eh? I suggest watching those on the official site instead (http://www.kizuna-game.jp/ go to special->trailer), the one in the article ist there as well (bottom one).

Still, even the official trailers are low quality, but at least you can catch a glimpse of the pencil filtering in the boss fight of the last trailer.
  • I want this to be awesome for the SotC-type fights, but even with my optimism, I doubt that'll happen. The combat system looks and sounds unengaging, and while it's nice that each sword has a unique spell, it also looks like every spell pretty much does the same thing.

sengoku basara 2 is way better and more good-looking than this

Looks janky, but I'm still curious. Loving the mini ARPG renaissance we're getting on Wii/DS these days.
