Siliconera Speaks Up: What Game Sold You On A Console?

Siliconera Speaks Up: What Game Sold You On A Console?

What were your console-sellers? Let’s face it, not everyone stands in line for days at a time each time a new console is released. What games persuaded you to buy a new console?

Siliconera Speaks Up: What Game Sold You On A Console?Jenni: The only console I bought on Day 1 was the DS, because I was incredibly excited about Animal Crossing: Wild World and all the other forthcoming games. When it came to other systems, I generally waited until they were established before jumping onboard.

For example, I bought the original PlayStation after Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean: Second Story were released because I was caught up in the hype surrounding both of those games. I ended up going for the PlayStation 2 after Final Fantasy X came out. I actually bought FFX a month before I ended up getting the PS2, because there was a sale at some store where it came with a guide.

Siliconera Speaks Up: What Game Sold You On A Console?Louise: That’s funny, because I bought the DS for Animal Crossing too, but not on day one. It took me about a year after the release of the DSphat to finally pick one up. The combination of both Trauma Center and Animal Crossing was too much for me to bear and I broke down and bought the DS. What’s weird is that I bored of Animal Crossing very quickly, but Trauma Center had a lasting effect.

So lasting that I ended up standing in line during the Wii launch to pick up the Wii as well as Trauma Center for the Wii. This might be heresy to some people, but I left with only Trauma Center and a Wii console, no Twilight Princess and no qualms about that.

Siliconera Speaks Up: What Game Sold You On A Console?Spencer: Wow… so many systems to reflect on, but I never really bought systems at launch until I started running Siliconera. Usually I would wait until there were five or so games I wanted before buying a console. Even now I still recommend this to people who ask me when they should buy a console.

I broke this rule for the Saturn where I rushed out to get one when Dragon Force came out. It was years after the Saturn launched, but up until then I wasn’t really interested in the other games. Dragon Force struck me as something unique and watching a hundred sprite zombies attacking each other was just plain awesome. Like Louise, I was also drawn to Trauma Center: Second Opinion. It was the only game I got with my US Wii at launch. A few weeks later I got Twilight Princess. I still think the Gamecube version controls better.

Siliconera Speaks Up: What Game Sold You On A Console?Ishaan: Like Spencer, I’ve always been conservative with my console purchases. I didn’t buy a PS2 until halfway through its lifecycle. I eventually gave in because there were so many RPGs on the system that I really wanted to try out. The same goes for the DS, which I only bought in 2006 when Final Fantasy III was remade. The only console I actually wanted at launch was the Wii because of the controller and because Red Steel (sniff) and Twilight Princess looked so awesome.

Part of it might have to do with the fact that I used to be a PC gamer and my friends and I would share all our games with each other. Money was hard to come by when you were a kid, so if anyone in the class managed to get their hands on a good game, every one else would have it by the end of the week.

There weren't really any games I can think of that sold me on systems. When I was old enough to ahve my own money to get my own systems, I sort of got them because of the hype around the systems themselves.

But, I guess there were some games I I went out and got immediately after getting the systems, so they must count for something:
    - for the PSX, I really wanted to play the Marvel Super Heroes fighting game.
    - for the PS2 my friends got my Street Fighter EX3, and I got myself Armored Core 2 on launch day. I remembered waiting a really long time for the “Resident Evil with swords” game called Onimusha.
    - for the PS3, I got it for the DualShock3, and subsequently got MGS4 in the bundle. I think I got GTA4 beforehand because I saw the special edition on sale, but that was also something I really wanted to play too.

Although I've had a thing for the Sega Saturn since I've seen it show up in retailers running Virtua Fighter in attract mode, there was one game that pushed me into seeing the Saturn as a priority purchase: Virtual On. Yeah, NiGHTs and Virtua Fighter 2 further tempted me along the way, but it was playing an in-store demo of Virtual On that got me into the Saturn as well as the giant robot genre of various mediums.

I do also relate with Trauma Center Second Opinion for making the Wii a must buy, as I purchased the game (and only that one game) months before I was finally able to find a Wii. Surprisingly, another thing that sold me on the Wii (as much as Trauma Center had) was the Virtual Console, as XBLA did for me on the 360. As a tradition sort of person who likes owning games in a physical format, the download services were a major influence on my recent two console purchases.

  • Aoshi00

I didn't get many consoles at launch either, w/ the exception of PS3 which I bought a month after launch, and then left w/ no games to play at that point. I got like $300 in American Express gift cards for Christmas so I thought what the hey.. In retrospect, MGS4 should've been my console seller w/ its 80Gb bundle and backward compatibility. Below is a list of my system sellers.

    PS2 — FFX (a year after system's launch)
Xbox — Shenmue 2 / Panzer Dragoon Orta
DS — Goemon / Castelavania Dawn of Sorrow
PSP — Megaman remake.. Crisis Core or Jeanne D'arc should've been my system seller..
360 — Blue Dragon (Jpn system), Star Ocean 4 (US system)
Wii — Trauma Center / Twilight Princess at launch, still remember the initial excitement of Wii Sports
PS3 — got it at launch w/ “no games” literally, still my biggest regret for jumping the gun.

I started saving up my lunch money to buy a Nintendo64 after only seeing a few screenshots of Super Mario 64. I finally got to play it on a kiosk a couple months before launch. I don't think I've ever been so impressed by a game simply by moving the joystick. After a few seconds, I backed off and told myself to wait. Super Mario 64 was an experience like no other at the time. If there was an overarching, unstated theme, it had to be freedom. Mario's movement into the third dimension was not to be missed.

  • SnaggleToe

I've actually bought several consoles for the love of 1 game:
-1st was 'NEO-GEO cart system' for “SamuraiShowdown1″ (everything needed including both controllers $500)
-2nd was 'PS1' for the import “Arc the Lad 1″ (again with converter, memory card etc… about $500)
-3rd was all of the arcade components and television adapter for 'Hyper NEO-GEO 64' for “SamuraiShowdown64″
-4th was >American< 'PS2' for “Code Age Commanders” (which I never was able to play, I couldn't get the swap trick to work) …. which led me to the …
-5th was >Japanese< 'PS2' for “Code Age Commanders” (which I never have been able to complete, as I've been stuck without a proper walkthrough anywhere online! Grrr )

I've always considered myself a gaming fanatic, but now that I see these stated all together, I should either be revered for my gaming fervor, or hit in the head for being a big dork! LOL

  • Divals

I'm just going to go with the highlights here, those being the ones that I can remember…

PS1: Final Fantasy VII. This was my first new console, I'd had a Sega Genesis before that which I got at a yard sale in 1997.
PS2: I don't think there was any one game, though I bought Zone of the Enders pretty quickly afterward. I think it was more the promise of future Final Fantasy games, along with backwards compatibility.
Xbox: Got the system used and old, but I think it would've been Halo 2, which I bought a couple years prior…
DS: Again, there wasn't any particular game. Just the desire for a new handheld that would play games I already owned, plus new stuff.
PSP: Definitely Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.
PS3: Started off with the lure of a remake of FFVII, but what really sold me was Disgaea 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Plus backwards compatibility and the ability to hook it up to my computer monitor.

  • MadMirko

I usually buy my consoles at launch. One exception is the HD generation, it took a year for me to jump-in and get a 360. I still don't have a PS3, as the library is largely redundant and I didn't like Valkyria as much as I wanted to.

Bought my PSPs for FFT (which was sad) and Metal Gear Acid 2 (bestest Metal Gear ever), and my NeoGeo Pocket for Faselei!, my Saturn for Dragon / Shining Force. My PSX came with FFVII and that ended my blind FF fanboyism.

Aside from that a new console is usually incentive enough.

  • Dragon Scholar

I guess I haven't shelled out for too many systems based on just one game.

Guardian Heroes sold the Sega Saturn for me. (The Legend of Oasis and Dragon Force were nice bonuses, though.)

I suppose Suikoden really got me on-board for the PlayStation, although Arc The Lad was also a factor. Still, I first had the thing mod-chipped around when SaGa Frontier 2 and Legend of Mana got their JP releases.

For the GameCube, I think Gotcha Force was what did it for me. And then Crystal Chronicles forced me to get a Game Boy Advance.

  • CJLopez

PS2 — A bunch of games i wanted to play since it was released. I bought my ps2 in 2005 so there were a lot of games to be played there
    Wii — Smash Brothers Brawl
    PS3 —- Mainly, sequels. MGS4, SC4, RE5, SF4, DMC4 (which i ended not playing)

  • http://myanimelist.net/profile/Kuronoa Kuronoa

I don't remember all of them but I clearly know:

Wii = Trauma Center Second Opinion (already owned TP on Gamecube)
Gamecube = Smash Bros Melee and Luigi's Mansion
Xbox = Crazy Taxi 3, Jet Set Radio Future (got it with bundle!)
PS2 = Jak and Daxter and Final Fantasy X
PSP = Lumines, Mega Man Powered Up

  • lostinblue

Tales of, Shin Megami Tensei, Mario, Chrono series (if only more games of the series came out) and Zelda are my system sellers.

  • http://kureyuki.livejournal.com Kay

Just like Spencer, I normally wait until there are enough games that impress me on a console before finally deciding to buy it. The only time I didn't take that into account was when The World Ends WIth You/Subarashiki Kono Sekai was announced during TGS 2006. Though I ended up buying the DS half a year before TWEWY's North American launch, it was the only reason I bought the DS in the first place. (Yes, I didn't have any DS games for it until TWEWY came out. it just sat there collecting dust for months…)

  • EvilAkito

I went through hell to get a Wii on launch day, all because I didn't want to wait three more weeks for the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess. Of course, Trauma Center helped too.

Going back a little further, I was finally sold on the PlayStation 2 after seeing the preview for Contra: Shattered Soldier, and I bought the original PlayStation solely for Mega Man 8. Of course, I ended up with a huge collection of RPGs on both consoles, so my initial impulses paid off.

  • Akimitsu

For this generation, I waited until there were games I wanted before buying the systems. For the Wii, I bought it alongside Smash Bros. Brawl when that came out. For the PS3, Disgaea 3 was the sole reason I bought one, even though I got the PS3 in August and didn't buy the game until like December (still yet to beat it).

  • Happy Gamer

i have never really bought systems day one but i remember what game i got for the system for couple systems back…I got these systems solely to play the first games i got for them.

SNES – Ranma 1/2 first fighting game lol yeah…got it at Nagoya Japan in 4th grade. Unlike the SNES here, my superfamicom had no Super mario World so had to buy it seperately. Thanks dad! :) good memories…he also got me a monitor supporting TV because in japan alot of people used AV cables and i still used RF.

    Sega Genesis – Golden Axe

    Sega Saturn – Guardian Heroes

PSX – Street Fighter Alpha. Got the PSX for eventual release of FF VII however altho i got it well before the game came out.

Sega Dreamcast – Sonic Adventures!! :D

    Gamecube – Resident Evil Remake

Gameboy Advance – Castlevania Games. First games were Castlevania Harmony Of Dissonance and Circle of the moon.

DS – technically Nintendogs bundle but also picked up Castlevania!!! i think i got all handhelds past couple gens for castlevania.

    PSP – Monster Hunter!!!!!! :D

Xbox 360 – Gears of War

Ps3 – Was a gift. but planned on getting it anyways. Metal gear Solid 4 Bundle

Wii – Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.

hope this didn't come out as showy or i have alot of systems thingy lol. i just really like collectin games. :)

i have 2 sources of wallet drains. Video Games and Vinyl LP records. T_T

  • Happy Gamer

i got to add that I got the PS2 for Onimusha Warlords. great game. needs a sequal :)

  • YoctoYotta

Of all the games below, FFVII, New Super Mario Brothers, and Bioshock were the only three where I knew a game was being released and said, “okay, I need to spend hundreds of dollars to play this immediately, get the hell out of my way.”

    NES (gift) – SMB3
    Genesis (gift) – Mortal Kombat
PSX (gift) – Final Fantasy VII
Dreamcast (bought) – Sonic Adventures and Soul Caliber
Game Boy Advance (bought) – It was the silver one, I rarely played it
PS2 (bought) – got it at launch, because I'm stupid
    PSP (bought) – Lumines
DS Lite (bought) – New Super Mario Brothers
    Xbox 360 (bought) – Bioshock
PS3 (bought) – Got a killer deal with 4 controllers and 4 games on a backwards compatible 80 gigger

  • YoctoYotta

Oh, and a Wii. I actually stood in line on launch day for that and Zelda was my prize (first Zelda I played), that was cool.

  • matty

I already had a NES and Atari when I was born.
None of these were bought even close to launch, but what I wanted and got:
Sega Gen – Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat!
    N64 – Mario and Golden Eye 64!
    PS1 – Resident Evil 2 and Twisted Metal 2!
    PS2 – Twisted Metal Black!
    DS – forgot!
Wii – House of the Dead series and RE0 (gamecube ver.)!
    PSP – Idolm@ster SP!
It wasn't till recently when I, too, made it a policy to buy a console/system when it has about 5 games that I wanted real bad. Idolm@ster was the exception since it's worth 7 games to me!
I decided to get a Xbox360, still on the fence about the PS3, but eventually will – possibly depending on what happens at E3 this year.

  • http://www.infinite-bits.com NickyD

I normally buy things when I get bored *shrug*. I like new things, so if I have the money, I just get whatever's the “newest” or “shiniest” or “mostest advancedest”.

To be honest, up until about 5 years ago, all of my consoles were gifts or inherited from my non-gaming sister. Why she got an NES and SNES is beyond me, but after she got bored of them, I just took 'em as my own.

In recent years, I just buy what I have a legacy with. I've always followed Sega, so I was with them through the Dreamcast. I followed Nintendo and their handhelds until the Wii; I don't think it's a console, but more of a “toy” with a nifty gimmick. I've followed Sony since the PlayStation – they've just released so many great games through the generations and have cemented my faith in them to bring me stuff I like to play.

Never really bothered with Microsoft. The original XBox had very little interesting, so I found no need to get the 360 (my PS2 at the time was still releasing way more games or far higher quality, graphical shine aside).

So no. I don't believe in system sellers. They help some people, sure, but I've got such a deep and rich history in gaming that I'm sort of set in my ways, like an old man who insists Ford or GM cars are still the greatest automobiles in the world.

  • Chris

    NES – Super Mario Brothers
    SNES – Super Mario World
Playstation – FF7 (Tremendous disappointment after FF6. But it's what kept me away from N64)
360 – No specific game, but it seemed like XBox was going to get a lot of exclusive JRPGs

  • Chris

    @nicky:

Wii may be based around a gimmick, but at least it still remembers action games are supposed to be fun, not overproduced interactive movies. I own all three new gen systems. Which game has garnered the most play time from me? Super Mario Galaxy.

Any other of the new gen games I really love (Mass Effect, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, etc) I feel before I can play it I need to have a two hour block of free time and be in the exact right mood. It's nice to have a game you can just sit down and play for half an hour like you could the old NES platformers.

  • 'rafael highwind

For me,Final Fantasy is the game that makes me buy a console.I love RPG,Final Fantasy is the best serie that I like, and I want to buy a PS3 because of this.Tales of Vesperia is a good game, now that the PS3 will have this game,I decided to buy this.
But I can buy only one console,so,I will not play Mario,Gears of War,and many other games.

PS3 is the console that I want to buy because of the RPGs(japonese RPGs,I dont like american RPGs,but I want to play to do my definitive opinion)and God of War.But I dont have enough money,so the PSP will be my first next-gen videogame.

Crisis Core,God of War,Patapon,Soul Calibur, there are so cool games for PSP!XD

    (Sorry for my English,I'm a brasilian =p)

  • Krysil

I got the Playstation for the sole reason to play Final Fantasy 12

  • 'rafael highwind

I forgot to say,the RPGs makes me to buy the PS2,Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2,FFX,FFXII,Rogue Galaxy,Tales of Abyss. And other games like God of War,Guitar Hero. These are my favourite games.

  • squall3031

Hmm… i had NES and I broke it. I had SNES and I gave it away after parting 5-6 years with it. I still keep my PS1, and I have PS2 and PS3. I also have PSP and then NDS plus Gamecube. Then I bought the next-gen console, PS3, Nintendo Wii and XBOX 360. And for sure, I'll be ready for PSP GO!.

  • http://www.hello-online.org papermoonshine

    Nintendo 64: WWF Wrestlemania 2000
    Playstation: Resident Evil
Playstation 2: Got Kessen first but was wanting Metal Gear Solid 2
    Gameboy Advance: Golden Sun
Playstation Portable: Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories
    Nintendo DS: Osu! Tatake! Ouendan!
X-box: Morrowind and DOA Beach Volleyball (yeah yeah, laugh it up)
X-box 360: Oblivion and 360 port of Final Fantasy XI
Playstation 3: Don't have one yet but it's gonna be hard to resist buying one when Katamari Tribute comes out. I can finally get that Naruto game and Metal Gear Solid 4 too.

  • arollo

    NES – Super Mario
    GameBoy – Tetris
Game Gear – that Power Rangers fighting game that was so awesome
Genesis – Sonic the Hedgehog/that X-Men beat-em-up that was so awesome
    N64 – Smash Bros/Mario 64
    GameBoy Colour – Tetris/Pokemon
PSx – SaGa Frontier (a friend let me play it at his house and I was hooked)
    GBA – Super Mario Advance
    DreamCast – ShenMue
PS2 – Final Fantasy X/The Bouncer (this was during my SquareSoft can do no wrong phase…..)
    XBox – Morrowind
    DS – New Super Mario/Pokemon
    PSP – Crisis Core/Star Ocean 1&2

I have yet to buy a PS3, 360, or Wii due to lack of interest. Am I too old for these modern, shiny games? Am I too in love with old timey 2D games?

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

The downloaable services really add a lot of creative games and classics for all of the consoles this generation. Most of my favorite PS3 games are downloadble only games.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Very cool story! I was really impressed by Super Mario 64 when I tried it too. I ended up buying a Nintendo 64 during the holiday rush by lucking out and seeing one in the story, but all of the copies of Super Mario 64 were sold out. So, I was stuck with a N64 and no game for like a few weeks.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

    Revered :)

I'm amazed you went so far to play Code Age Commanders! It's a strange game, like Square Enix's take on Dynasty Warriors.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Good thing there are a ton of other RPGs on the DS too. Hopefully, your DS isn't collecting dust waiting for “the World Ends With You Again”.

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Games and records? We're a lot a like. I used to collect records too.

  • Raccoon

Yep, me too. Actually I never buy a console at launch and always wait at least for the announcement of about five titles that I am interested in and that I really want to play. Of cause there are games that have a higher priority for me, especially RPGs, but I would never even think of buying a console for just one game. That way I won't be disappointed later, and even better: saving hundreds of euros! The prices for the systems are always high in the beginning, and great games are rare. Waiting a year or two (or even three or four) you just pay half as much and some fantastic games are finally out. That being said, I never understood the people who want to have a console as soon as possible right after the launch.

  • taiko1983

psp- echchrome- I would not have bought a psp if echochrome is not made by Sony. It is one the unique titles that you can find on the psp. Great concept and good music.

NDSL- Brain age series.- I bought the crimson red dsl pack with brain age 2 and I am glad that I made the leap. Now I have traded up for a Dsi and I am enjoying rhythm heaven.

Wii- Wii fit -I got sucked in to the game because of the soccer minigame in wii fit.

  • thaKingRocka

i've never bought a system just for one game; i always expect to get plenty of gaming goodness out of a system. sometimes that doesn't happen though. i'm looking at you, wii. here's my list though.
sega master system – black belt
    nes – mega man 2
genesis – altered beast (was totally psyched for golden axe too)
    tg16 – bonk's revenge
    super nintendo – final fight
ps1 – no game in particular, went for the trade-in upgrade from snes and gen
saturn – x-men vs. street fighter
    n64 – goldeneye
dreamcast – marvel vs. capcom (then those bastards delayed it from the launch)
ps2 – just to get with the new since i could play ps1 games on it still, timesplitters was cool
xbox – jet set radio future (thought many more reasons came, this one game was enough for me)
    gamecube – metroid prime
    psp – ridge racers
    ds – castlevania
360 – project gotham 3 (got a great price on it used in akihabara)
ps3 – same reason as ps2, got trade-in and heard rumblings of fewer features on newer models
    wii – metroid prime 3

  • http://kureyuki.livejournal.com Kay

My DS has been getting more than enough love lately because of ATLUS' busy release schedule along with Final Fantasy Chronicles: Echoes of Time. Oh yes, and Trauma Center 1 & 2 too. :)

  • http://rpg-inn.com JPZER0

Louise knows where it's at B)

Bought the DS for Trauma Center and bought the wii for Second Opinion.

  • daizyujin

Generally I don't buy consoles when they first come out. The only ones I have ever done that with are the Dreamcase, Gamecube, PSP, DS, and Wii.

I think the game that sold me on the 360 was Phantasy Star Universe (which I don't play anymore.)

On the PS3 it was probably Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Virtua Fighter 5 (before it was announced for 360.) Also waited for that $100 price drop so I could get a 60 gig before they took them off the market.

  • ReturnOfSomeDude

Xbox 360: Sad as it is…the game that convinced me to buy it… Rockstar Table Tennis. (Geometry Wars helped.)
PS3: MGS4 & the gunmetal console convinced me. (I wish I had 3 other gunmetal controllers, though.)
    Wii: I remain unconvinced.
DS: Phoenix Wright convinced me to buy a used one.
    PSP: Ace Combat X.

  • http://www.nakedsushi.net/ Louise

Ouch on the PS3 launch console. I was tempted to buy a PS3 on launch too, but still haven't because of the “no games” thing. I thought LBP would seal the deal for me, but I guess all the hype made me disappointed when it finally got released even though I haven't actually played it.

  • http://www.nakedsushi.net/ Louise

As much as I love the SMT series, if I had started with Nocturne as my first PS2 game, I would have ran away crying.

  • Nekobo

    Mmm…

Super NES: Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger
    N64: Super Mario 64
    Dreamcast: Shenmue
    GameCube: Smash Bros. Melee
Xbox: Jade Empire and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
PS2: Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2
Wii: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4, PSN games
Game Boy Advance SP: just wanted one
DS: since the DS launch sucked, Super Mario 64 DS
PSP: Lumines and Metal Gear Ac!d

  • shiina_ringo_will_be_my_wife

PS1 – I can't really remember if I bought this, or if it was given to me? I really wanted it for Dance Dance Revolution. My young gaysian (gazn?) dumbass self wanted it so bad, I traded in my N64 along with all of my games (excluding for some reason Zelda and Killer Instinct) to buy DDR and the dance pad, and I still had to pay like $40 out of pocket! I must say, the PS1 had some great games, though. It introduced me to JRPGs and the music game Bust a Groove is still one of my favorites.

PS2 – Final Fantasy X/ Kingdom Hearts. They were actually out for a while before I picked up the system, though. I bought both of them for $20 as Greatest Hits about a month before I actually got the system.

Gamecube – For the most part, I wanted it for Donkey Konga. Waaaaay after system launch, I got it used for like $80. A huge plus for waiting so long was that almost all the games I wanted were Player's Choice priced at $20.

XBox 360 – Guitar Hero III. Also, Beautiful Katamari, which kind of disappointed me, but the other games I have for the system are great (my system of choice for Rock Band). To a lesser degree, Geometry Wars made me want the system, too.

Wii – Twilight Princess; all the hype really got to me, and when I demoed it, I was sold. Again, I bought the game long before I had my hands on the system. I was lucky. My friend bought a couple and was going to keep one and sell the other. But, he was running out of funds and getting hungry, so I bought one off of him at just about retail price!

DS – Elite Beat Agents. Yup. I remember I bought this the night before some holiday. My dumbass didn't buy a game, because I wasn't completely sure that I wanted to keep it (EBA wasn't released yet). When I made up my mind that night and opened the box, all the stores were closed and I was stuck playing with pictochat by myself for the whole damn weekend.

DS Lite – Kanji Sono Mama DS Rakubiki Jiten, a Kanji dictionary/ a bunch of JPN GBA games. I figured, I could buy a bunch of Japanese games from playasia/yesasia, use one of my DS's to play said games, and then use the other as a dictionary. That way, I could work on my Japanese, and have yet another reason to spend my money. Of course, it didn't quite work out that way. It became too much of a hassle to translate while I played, so I just didn't play text-heavy games. I still ordered them to add to my collection, and I was so happy when I completed the bit generations series.

N64 – Zelda 64 After staring at my copy of Zelda 64 for so long, I decided to go find a N64 at a pawn shop. I was successful and bargained my way down to $15 (I think?) I remembered saying that all I had on my was $15, and the lady gave in. Then, when she rang it up, it came out to like $16.25, and I had to pull out another $5 to pay for tax, haha. When I discovered the joys of Ebay, I built up my collection to try and replace all of my childhood memories.

PSP – DJMax Portable Clazziquai Edition. There were a couple of other games I wanted (LocoRoco and Patapon), but this one made me need the PSP. I was a fan of Clazziquai Project, and I thought it would be so cool to have a Korean game. Ahhh, that Alex is so dreamy… haha.

PS3 – I haven't bought it yet, but Katamari Tribute/Forever is really making me think it's about time to save up (or get out my credit card). The little artsy games on the PSN (a la pixeljunk) are appealing to me too.

I like this question. I've owned a lot of systems though.

NES: Dragon Warrior. Yes, the first one.
    SNES: Super Street Fighter II.
    Genesis: Mortal Kombat II.
    PlayStation: Tekken II.
Dreamcast: Marvel vs. Capcom II (import version, DC was imported before it released in US)
    Sega Saturn: NiGHTS
PlayStation 2: Devil May Cry..I think. It was either that or Final Fantasy X. I can't remember exactly.
    Xbox: Sudeki.
Xbox 360: Sonic the Hedgehog (strange choice I know…if it weren't for the load times though…)
PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, even though I bought the system way before that game came out, I had to have that game)

I paid $700 for a import N64 the day after release in Japan. I got to try Super Mario 64 and there went my rent money!

I also got a Super Nintendo for Super Metroid.

But the big one for my was I bought a Turbo Duo because of Y's Book 1 & 2. The sad thing was, by the time I had saved up enough money to get a Duo, they had been removed from the stores;_; So I had to buy a used one.

The mysterious Camelot Revolution RPG WOULD have sold me on the Wii, but then they announced Golden Sun DS, which is not for the Wii. The Metroid Demo sold me on my launch DS (and the investment has proven worth it, seeing as how it's the only console I own). As for my other consoles, I waited until the GBA was $70 before paying for it myself. Every console before then (PS2, N64, and GB Color/pocket) was a gift from my parents.

I never buy a console for one game. I wait for like five to ten games that are interesting.

So I didn´t get a PS3 or Xbox 360 or PSP untill late. The reason I bought a PS3 was rather to have it as a PS2 console untill the games like FFXIII and such arrived.

Just recently after I bought it Disgaea 3 was announced so let´s say that was the reason I got a PS3 :p

For Xbox 360 it was the exclusive RPGs to the console. Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia and such.

PSP was some game I don´t remember.
