The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks In Stores This Year

By Spencer . May 7, 2009 . 1:38am

Nintendo ended their GDC keynote announcing The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, but never set a release date. Their fiscal year 2010 financial outlook released tonight at least gives the game a timeline, forecasting the portable Zelda game will launch in the latter half of this calendar year.

Seems like The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be Nintendo’s DS / DSi holiday game. In case you forgot about the Zelda train here’s the trailer.

Hell, yes! :) Portable Zelda is on the right track (so sorry), but I have room for a console version as well…

Cannot wait. All I ask is that they don’t make me go through the same dungeon ten times over.

What does everyone think Nintendo asked Gamestop to reserve space for at the end of the year? Is it Spirit Tracks or Wii Fit Plus? I doubt it’s a Wii Zelda. Nintendo has no need to release two Zelda games in the same fiscal year. I doubt it’s Pikmin 3 either, though I do expect that to release this year.

Still, here’s what we know so far about the Wii Zelda to get the discussion rolling:

    1. 2006: Game Informer reports Zelda Wii has been “deep in development for around a year.”

    [Not bloody likely]

    2. Miyamoto on Twilight Princess: “Without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form.”

[Making it more compatible with Wii a la Phantom Hourglass to DS? I'd love to see them go wild with the interface using the remote.]

    3. GDC, 2007: Aounuma shows TP running in first-person. He does not “necessarily think it will change that drastically” but that the series needs some big unique ideas.

[This seems to support 2. Again, I suspect streamlining the design around the remote and hopefully MotionPlus.]

    3. Miyamoto, E3 2008: New Zelda is “in the works.” People from DS Zelda team working on Wii version.

[Probably referring to pre-production? See next comment]

    4. ONM #37: Teams “still in the planning stages,” and “”we wouldn’t expect to see or hear anything more until the E3 event next summer at the earliest.” Furthermore, “even that may be optimistic.”

[We'll be lucky if they show off anything related to a new Wii Zelda at E3. These statements are from November '08. That's 7 months to get a solid demo up and running. It's not like Nintendo to show something off in its early stages, especially going by their new policy of not building up hype too early on.]

    5. Surfergirl rumour from I don’t remember when: Retro’s next title is a Zelda spin-off, announcement could come around E3.

[This obviously hasn't happened so far but if true, it could mean we're getting two Wii Zelda games.]

    Anything I missed?
