Sakaguchi Dreamt Of A Virtual World RPG

image Mistwalker founder and Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, penned a story where a giant plant controls Earth while people live on Mars hooked into an Earth simulation called reDREAM.

Beyond mutant plants and the environmental ruin theme Sakaguchi explains the reDREAM concept had a character who couldn’t discern if he was in a virtual world or if he was in the real world on a mission to reclaim Earth. reDREAM also an undercurrent of commentary about how players compose themselves in MMOs and online games.”I like the notion that he could be reckless and bad-mannered in the virtual world, but those actions also affecting the real world,” Sakaguchi says. “Like what goes around comes around. Like MMORPGs, action of immoral behavior somewhat reflects one’s true private life….something like that anyway.”

Be sure to read the reDREAM story concept too. Do you think reDREAM would be a good story for a game?

So… something that vaguely resembles .hack?

    • shion16

yep that really sounds like tsukasa

  • MisterNiwa

.hack from the final fantasy creator could be quite interesting.

This definitely sounds like an intriguing concept. I can see the parallels, but I think this would wind up very different from .hack. From what little information Sakaguchi shares, it seems closer to classic (or “post,” whatever) cyberpunk–environmental degradation, imperfect offworld colonies as a response to some crisis, virtual worlds built out of nostalgia, etc. Something a younger Bruce Sterling or Neal Stephenson might dream up. It’s a promising idea. Hopefully he’ll work something out with it.

Also, I’m a bit surprised. He’s not a bad photographer.

Sounds interesting, cool post-apocalyptic / .hack-like virtual world concept. Would like to see this more more fleshed-out.

Kinda makes me think of Lain.

I wish I could hug or at least high five you for that reference.

Makes me think of Philip K. Dick :D

I like the idea. Hey, maybe the player only _thinks_ he’s in a virtual world but actually it’s the real thing. A bit like “Ender’s Game”. The Mars government in reDREAM could try to take back planet Earth by sending people there who think they don’t fight for real.
And plant-like monsters as the main enemies seems like a nice different idea for an RPG to me ^^
