Sega Has Plenty Of Genesis Games Ready For XBLA

The Gunstar Heroes discovery was right on target and it won’t be the only Genesis classic coming to Xbox Live Arcade this summer. Cult classic Comix Zone, sci-fi RPG Phantasy Star II, and Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are all slated for the Xbox 360. Unfortunately, PlayStation 3 owners only get Gunstar Heroes.

The seven games on the list are: Gunstar Heroes, Altered Beast, Shinobi (the arcade version), Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. If you have Sonic 3 or Sonic 2 and Sonic & Knuckles stored on your Xbox 360 hard drive you can unlock Knuckles as a playable character. Sonic fans might remember clicking two cartridges together. Now, the unique feature has been simplified to computer code. Interestingly, Sonic’s Genesis Collection, a compilation of Genesis games, does not have the lock on games even though Sonic & Knuckles and other Sonic games are part of the collection.

Each downloadable game has been “reworked for high definition” (read: filter), has online leaderboards, and Network Play – if a two player mode is available. Hmm… I wonder how those Phantasy Star II leaderboards work. Most experience? Longest play time?

I want to kick someone for not including GunStar heroes and the Lock-on versions on the Genesis Collection and then releasing them on XBLA. How can you POSSIBLY think that’s a good idea!? It’s spitting in the face of the users who actually BOUGHT their collection :(

    Now I’m mad.

  • TurkeyPotPie

I thought I read a while back that Microsoft was trying to discourage publishers from dumping what amounts to ROMs on XBLA. So now they’re allowing these Genesis games, and yet ports of arcade shoot-em-ups on XBLA are a no-no? I guess Sega has more clout than Cave/5pb.

And I agree that it’s ridiculous the lock-on Sonic and Gunstar Heroes were missing from the Genesis Collection.

But they’re not straight up ports. They got the HD widescreen treatment, online for multiplayer games, and leaderboards.

This is kind of pointless, what with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection containing all these and WAY more. Just my thoughts, but seriously, that’s way too many re-releases, even for Sega.

edit: er, well, most of these. I will be adding Gunstar Heroes to my collection =)

All I care about is online co-op with GSH.

Gunstar heros + online play = must buy.

  • EdgeKun

Oh gods, the lock-on versions of S&K + S2 / S3 are going to be on XBLA?

If i can play the full unabridged Sonic 3 & Knuckles, these will be day one purchases for me without a doubt. In any case, it’s about damn time Sega. Gunstar and S3&K were the main reasons i didn’t bother picking up the “ultimate” collection.

It’s funny that Gunstar Heroes wasn’t included with the Genesis Collection, considering there was another Treasure game on it (Dynamite Headdy). Anyways, this is a slap to the face for those that bought the collection, and also a slap to the PS3 users since they ONLY get Gunstar Heroes (which I will probably buy since it’s quite the awesome game).

although i still download some of these classics via wii or xbox etc most of the times i don’t bother. because many of them you can play them on emulator or better yet classically by using actualy mega drive system etc.
when they release these games i feel they should at least bump the graphics up a bit. my latest fav was R-Types! that blew me away since i was a big fan. it wasn’t a significant 3d makeover but i didn’t want that. it was what i always dreamed of, great 2d game with great HD visuals.

i wished they release Phantasy Star 4 with HD upgrades id be very happy.

Already have most of these on VC… I hope M2 institutes a similar lock-on plan for S&K there…
