Soul Bubbles Gets A Japanese Makeover

By Spencer . May 11, 2009 . 10:50am

Interchannel is bringing the charming bubble blowing game, Soul Bubbles, to Japan under the name Awatama (Bubble Bullet). But, something looks well… different. In this version the shaman looks like an anime fairy with purple hair.

Remember Ratchet’s eyebrows? The Soul Bubbles transition is another example of how Western games get localized for Japan. The original artwork is on top and the new artwork made for Japan is on the bottom.

This makeover isn’t just limited to concept art. Awatama uses the fairy model instead of the bald baby. Which do you prefer?

A pretty superficial change, to be honest. I prefer the original model, but that might just be because I’m used to it.

Would a protagonist without pants make for an unattractive mascot, or what is the reasoning behind the change (which seems mostly about the clothes)?

Totally superficial! And that’s what makes it interesting! It’s like how Kirby’s eyebrows are angry on the US box art albeit this is an in game change.

I like the Japanese art better than the original art, but the Original in game model better than the Japanese one.

I haven’t played this game…was it ever released in NA? I’m an anime fan so I like the Japanese version, but the original has a certain charm to it.

It was. Toys R Us exclusive I believe. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3163607

      (Get it, it’s fun!)

I prefer the Jpn design too, the original is unique but looks kind of weird.

If the game is decent why is it only exclusive to Toysrus? Last time I got burned by getting Nezumix for the original Xbox (also sold in Toysrus only), and it majorly sucked.

Thanks, I’ll see if I can find it at our local one, if not, I’ll order it some day.

I prefer the original but I’m somewhat biased. I’m alright with the design change though; whatever will give the game more sales. It’s a really charming game and a solid platformer type as well.

I like the fairy’s character design better, but I’m admittedly getting a little weeaboo here

  • BudDudandSlash

Interesting! I just bought this game today. $9.99 at Toys R Us! So far it’s a lot of fun!

And… the original model is better in my eyes.

I like the Japanese character. It’s cuter.
