So, that Vanguard Storm trademark wasn’t for a Square Enix action game. It’s a subtitle for a Crystal Defenders sequel. Crystal Defenders: Vanguard Storm is also a defense game, but not a tower defense game. Vanguard Storm is a monster blocking game.
Monsters move from the left side of the screen to the right. You have to block them with job classes from Final Fantasy Tactics A2. The system is has a rock-paper-scissors element to it. Soldiers are good against ground troops, but can’t hit flying ones and are not effective against mushy puddings. Archers take care of Ahrimans and Black Mages hit puddings with spells. Players can beef up their line with HP restoring White Mages, attack boosting Bishops, and Paladins that shield a line from advancing enemies.
Like Crystal Defenders, Crystal Defenders: Vanguard Storm is premiering on mobile phones. If you have an iPhone you can get it right now on the app store for $4.99. A console port has not been announced at this time, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this game on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN later in the future.
