Now Square Enix Is Teasing An Announcement

Now Square Enix Is Teasing An AnnouncementSquare Enix refreshed their Nanashi no Game (Nameless Game) website last night. Instead of describing the game and hosting a flash demo most of the information is gone. Click around on the mirrored site and you appear on a page that says you should return in seven days. Famitsu explains this is linked to an announcement.

Nanashi no Game is a Nintendo DS horror game with inspiration from The Ring. After playing a cursed RPG the character is condemned to die in seven days. Solving the riddle means searching the “real” world and entering the cursed game on a virtual “TS” handheld.

Nanashi no Game came out in Japan last July so what is Square Enix planning to announce? An English version? Nah. Square Enix USA or Europe would do that. Perhaps, this is related to the Nier trademark Square Enix recently filed, the doing business with Grasshopper Manufacture blip, or both.

Man, I just beat this game yesterday so whatever they’re planning couldn’t have come at a more perfect time (besides still no release for out west….).
The concept was cool, interaction with the actual cursed game was minimal, but I thought how they planned it out was genius (although I was playing on the DSi, but I got the idea), and the game overall was very short, but the experience was memorable and will stay with me till their next project.
If they just polish those rough spots and once I get my hands on it I can picture myself flipping my ****! For me it’ll be like what Etrian Odyssey 2 was to the first game.

I wonder what the Jpn update is.. So the game is very scary playing w/ headphones? W/ so many Jpn horror movies being adapted to their Hollywood counterparts, one would think there’s a big enough market to bring this game here.. I just checked out the trailers again, I think I’m too chicken to play this..

I did wear headphones and, yes, I did fall back a little on my chair at a couple parts. Like, ” . . .WHOA!”. I had already seen a walkthrough of it on Youtube and it still got me!
I won’t spoil anything, but one was a “boo!” (much of the game feels like walking in a haunted house; layout-wise, ghosts chasing you a lot) moment I was not expecting and another just freaked me out. Ever seen The Eye (original) and saw that ONE ghost that was really hard to catch at a subdued scene during the movie and you’re the only person who noticed despite many of your friends who saw the film and didn’t see that one ghost staring right at you? Yeah, that got me looking like a crazy man for weeks.
There are scary parts, but I imagine it would greatly add the overall experience if you could read what exactly was going, which from what I could gather was very clever and original as far as video game stories go. The story itself isn’t original, but how it was integrated into this game really hooked me for a while. If they could top this the same way in a sequel I’d be very impressed.
I’m losing hope of this getting a release over here for several reasons, but one being that I think many people will think “lol wtf”, but not in a good way like the Wario games. I can see a lot of reviewers focusing on just how you move your character in first person. Who knows? There were a few games I thought that were “unconventional” , yet had success. It’s just this one seems to have quite a few of those elements rolled up into this one.

I guess the lukewarm reception in Jpn doesn’t make publisher confident in bringing the game over. Sounds like a very unique and immersive experience, like reading and being in a ghost story. I can’t watch those movies, like I said I’m too chicken (so Fatal Frame or Ju-On is out for me). I can play something like Hotel Dusk or Fragile which has a more cartoonish presentation. Maybe the upcoming announcement is a live action movie or something?
