A Closer Look At Square Enix’s Nier

By Spencer . May 29, 2009 . 6:18pm

Square Enix announced Nier this morning, but didn’t divulge details. This trailer shows a lot more of the game, introduces the hero who looks like a Viking, and the shadowy creatures he fights.

The official site explains Nier is armed with more than an enormous sword. He has multiple weapons and can magic. Square Enix also says players will “explore hauntingly familiar lands”. Hmm… is Nier a post a-plauge-yptic vision of Earth? The future of Ivalice?

How about a new good (not like the PS2 “sequel”) Brave Fencer Musashi.

  • Happy Gamer

i really hate to say this but why is it that this game look so uninteresting…

If there wasn’t a logo at the end of the video I wouldn’t believe it was square.
It looks acceptable, but somewhat generic at this point. Hopefully it’s got some crazy mechanics behind it. I like that the protagonist is older, though.

  • Yeah, I agree with some of the comments here… It looks like Square is trying their hand at the Western market’s God of War-esque, high-action genre. Which are unfortunately a dime a dozen recently.

The setting looks like it could be interesting. I’ll look forward to Square Enix’s visual design, at least. :I

This game is not being developed by Square-Enix (hence, they lack of the square-enix touch, style and polish). It’s being outsourced and developed by some company named, Cavia, Inc.

Btw, Who an the hell is Cavia, Inc? An what games have they created?

    • Dais

You kidding? You’ve never heard of Cavia and their game quality roller coaster?

I mean, look at that….it’s an almost schizophrenic track record.

(some of the games, such as the first Drakengard, are schizophrenic in and of themselves)

  • Ivalice will probably be the setting of another Final Fantasy (spinoff) so I doubt that but, I have no idea what those familiar lands could be otherwise either.

  • LPC

    Vagrant Story lol.

  • Aoshi00

I liked Drakengard by Cavia, they were the ones going to work on Cry On until it was scrapped right? I dunno, looks kind of uninspired like Rygar..

  • Kashi

Wow, could this look any less generic? At least Drakengard tried to do something interesting but this looks lackluster and bland. But then again, it’s only an initial impression so hopefully the game will shape up when more media is released.
