Is A New Mario Game Coming This Year?

By Spencer . May 30, 2009 . 6:19pm

imageNikkei Net reports that Nintendo plans to release a new Mario game in the second half of the year. (Thanks for the tip Ishaan!!) No specifics were mentioned. Should we get excited?

Maybe. The report may have been referring to Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games which stars Mario and will be published by Nintendo in Japan. It could be a Mario RPG, a new Paper Mario game or Mario anything.

The Nikkei also mentions a sequel to Wii Fit has to be Wii Fit Plus. The follow up includes online support so you can compare your physical prowess with friends and is scheduled to ship this fall.

  • Hello Hello

It’s hard to say if we should get excited. It could be a new Mario game like Galaxy, but it’s probably just as likely that it’s a spin-off like one of the sports titles.

  • Kaoro

    Mario & The Spirit Tracks?

Nah, I’m not holding my breath for any mega Mario announcements. I’d love for them to surprise me though :).

If the Olympic game doesn’t have hockey, it’s going to suck.

Nintendo is the new Sony who was the new Nintendo, which means they are more than happy to sit on their laurels for a while and not do anything awesome like New Super Mario Bros. 2.

    • Mr. Mee

Oh please bring on New Super Mario Bros. 2!

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Too soon for another Mario for me. More importantly, if Nintendo IS going to show a new Mario at E3, it probably means we won’t see Zelda or Retro’s new project. I’d rather have one of those two at this point, considering I still haven’t finished Galaxy.

You know we’ll just get a ton of sales charts and embarassing Cammie Dunaway moments.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

You know, that press conference was Cammie’s very first major public appearance representing the company. It’s been a whole year since then…I’m pretty sure she’s had enough time to get acquainted with the industry and people’s expectations.

    • Charlie Maib

Well they really should hold off on a new Mario game because you haven’t finished Galaxy. You need to get the Big N’s number and give them a call when you’re done. Thanks!

Just what I prefer of the two. Besides, their talks of giving Zelda an overhaul have really gotten me curious.

  • Mazen

Main Mario series is up there in my most favorite ever but Zelda is much more important to me a new main Zelda announcement does shake me and effect me real positively it makes me always thinking about the game and feel enthusiast until release like with TP,

Nintendo didn’t announce new Mario and Zelda in the same E3 ever so am afraid now, I hope they surprise us and do it.

  • MadMirko

At this rate Nintendo will start releasing titles before they get around to announce them, so why not?

    Not holding my breath, though.

    • Mazen

They did that with some of their Wiiware games.

      • Serge73

Yeah, I do wish they would announce more Wiiware and DSiWare games earlier…

  • Serge73

I’d love to see a new Mario game, but it does seem too soon. NSMB is still selling pretty well, and Galaxy came out too recently…

Disregarding the Mario Tennis GC port, the 12 months hasn’t had that many Mario spin-offs though, so I do bet there will be something like that announced. They’re especially overdue for a new Mario Party, considering how well minigame compilations sell on the Wii…
