Dual Screen Djinni Demonstrated In The Golden Sun DS Trailer

By Spencer . June 2, 2009 . 11:43pm

Djinni, elemental creatures that boost stats and act as powerful summons, are a core element of the Golden Sun series. They’re back for Golden Sun DS and when called they take up both screens.

Golden Sun DS has a unique visual style. The world is in 3D, but the models look like sprites. It’s a happy medium I hope more RPGs embrace.

I’ve got a soft spot for early 3D. When you don’t have millions of polygons to throw around, the simpler more stylized 3D that was common during the 32-bit era works so much better. A lot of anime or cartoony 3D just doesn’t look right on modern consoles. High-poly anime-style in particular starts looking really weird on the 360/PS3, with models looking kind of like porcelain dolls (Star Ocean 4, I’m looking at you). With anime I think less (polys) is more, with rare exceptions like Blue Dragon, which had a sort of claymation look going on.

Anyway, my babbling aside, I’m glad to see Camelot pumping out some nice DS graphics. I loved their particular style of RPG going back to the Shining series.

yeah i remember these were times when anything 3d looked cool etc. heck even 2d with 3d or just really good 2d. in fact let me rephrase it…any game that was fun was fun. its odd most of this gen’s rpgs i have played that were very good were mostly handhelds…i know technology is increasing but none of the current gen rpgs have really captured my interest. i did have ton of fun with lost odyssey, blue dragon and tales series. i didn’t count mass effect for it felt really not like an RPG for me alothough i had a great time with it.

Talk about nostalgia – that giant robot/mummy thing busting out of the pyramid and shooting off a rocket fist reminds me of when Square Enix was still making those fantastic, ridiculous and ultimately tedious “FMV summons” in the late 90s Final Fantasy games.
