What Does The Director Of Quantum Think About Being Compared To Gears of War?

By Spencer . June 17, 2009 . 11:12pm

Ever since Tecmo unveiled their third person shooter, Quantum, the media has compared it to Gears of War. When Makoto Shibata, Director, showed the game to me I asked how he felt about the constant comparisons.

“The comparisons are OK. Resident Evil 4 is what started the TPS (third person shooter) genre. Gears took that further and is another evolution,” Shibata replied. Later in the interview, after discussing graphic violence, Shibata followed up with, “The first question you asked, ‘is it tough being compared to much to Gears of War’ was interesting. That’s the first time we’ve actually been asked that.”

“No way,” I hastily said. “Are you serious?”

Peter Garza, Localization Producer, chimed in. “Everybody says it, always Gears, but nobody ever asks anything about being compared to Gears.”

Quantum, Tecmo’s first third person shooting game, is slated for release on the PlayStation 3 next year. You’ll hear more about Quantum in our developer interview way before then.

Well from the official trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHxnJLRcxOE
it seems at least the characters design and general art is a million times better than Gears comparing the art in them is just funny,
also the cutscenes in Quantum looks professional unlike the hilarious cutscnese in Gears,
Quantom just needs an advertisement budget at least 1/1000 of Gears advertisement budget and it should do fine but knowing Tecmo this will not happen.

I’m not horribly fond of the art/character designs in Gears, but I don’t agree that they’re “a million times better” in this. Actually, I don’t think they’re better at all.

Also, while I agree that the cutscenes in Gears are hilarious, Quantum (judging by the trailer) will essentially just be “TOWER, TOWER, TOWER, REVENGE, TOWER, TOWER, REVENGE, TOWER”. I mean, let’s face it, they’re shooters, these kinds of things aren’t going to be anything special.

I hope you are not “horribly fond of the art/character designs” means you are not fond at all,
shooters can have great cutscenes Metal gear and the best FPS ever imo Break Down (I recommend playing it thoroughly you will be surprised how Half Life 2 copied everything from it, like it is a guide book and still didn’t make it as breath taking as Break Down also Fear and Bioshock stole many ideas from Break Down)
While I don’t know how the cutscenes and story in this game will turn out its too early to say it will be just about Tower and revenge.

        • Hraesvelgr

Well, I would say I like the Gears character designs better than the ones in Quantum… My only real issue is how they’re unnecessarily huge, but that looks to be the case in Quantum, as well. And they find it strange to be compared to Gears? lol

I never played Breakdown personally, but the Metal Gear series is pretty ridiculous, in my opinion, and they make it even more ridiculous with each new game.

Agree on the last point, but I did say I was just going by the trailer. They put too much emphasis on lines like “ANOTHER TOWER” or “THE TOWER’S CHANGING” or “ANOTHER TOWER”, plus there was some “REVENGE” in there. But eh, I don’t expect anything out of it because Japanese developers are pretty average this gen and I don’t really like anything from Tecmo in the first place.

I have a hard tiem not seeing this coming later to X360 also the game would fit on that system perfectly. If it doesn’t I will be fine however, since I have a PS3 for these types of situations.

  • Hraesvelgr

Man, did he seriously say that Resident Evil 4 started the TPS genre? That’s pretty hilarious. The genre existed before RE4 even began development!

    • Aoshi00

Exactly, I thought I read it wrong the first time. This comment is not very encouraging.

  • Aoshi00

It certainly feels like a Gears clone, except a less interesting one. I was really immersed in Gears’ world w/ its Alien-esque design combined w/ European architectures. Quantum’s trailer showing the guy going up the moving stairs (Harry Potter?) was very monotonous, I hope the tower is not the only locale.

The only thing special for this game is the guy can throw the girl to the enemies.. Gears has the beautiful Anya as the poster girl too but she’s not playable.

“The comparisons are OK. Resident Evil 4 is what started the TPS (third person shooter) genre.”

I lol’d at this because it reminded me of Fade to Black.
