This Week In Imports: Hello, Hatsune Miku

This Week In Imports: Hello, Hatsune MikuHatsune Miku: Project Diva, a music/rhythm game starring the popular vocaloid idol, is this week’s main release.

Sega hasn’t said anything about bringing it over. Maybe NIS America can pick it up and publish it as a PlayStation Network download. Their parent company licensed Hatsune Miku for Tori no Hoshi: Aerial Planet and they have a relationship with Sega from Sakura Wars.

Minna no Oekaki Yasan is another interesting title, it’s a Nintendo DS drawing training game from Taito. And that’s about it for imports this week. Anything worth picking up?

Okay! I have bets that what is going to be this weeks new release best seller, isn't even on this list sadly.

  • Nyanyaan

BlazBlue getting some strong early buzz, but I'm not sure how far the audience will go beyond Arc System Works fans. Went ahead and gotz the AZN Project Diva coming although I don't think a localization is outside the world of possibility. The whole nendroid thing has a bit of US interest and we did get DJ Fever.

  • QBasic

BlazBlue is totally gonna get the dead end of the stick thanks to Call of Juarez.

    Typical of the American gaming scene; if it has “blood” in the title, it guarantees sales in the triple digits. >_>;;

Getting the rights to publishing Project DIVA over here would be a legal mess that I'm not sure even the likes of NIS America would have the cojones to attempt. Nobody's quite sure how big the Vocaloid fanbase (and even the fan-converts in waiting) is over here.

My guess? Big enough to justify the gamble!

  • Volcynika

    BLAZBLUE!

No kidding. Since there was a surge of games last week it might be better for those publishers.

I wonder how wide a release of BlazBlue will have. It's getting good buzz, but Aksys games usually have low print runs. Battle Fantasia is rough to find!

The ASW fans will get it for sure and you're right to question the reach. There are ton of other fighting games out this year. Street Fighter IV and KOF XII likely took up the casual market so BlazBlue caters to people who need more than one fighting game.

I wouldn't count out a US release of Project Diva either, but I don't think Sega will pick it up. NIS might though.

I think licensing Project Diva should be easier than most music games since the “music” is from vocaloid albums. At least a potential US publisher wouldn't have to track down the rights to Japanese pop songs or replace them with US pop music.

The gamble could pay off very well so we're all for it at Siliconera!

  • Nyanyaan

Here's hoping a few of the more casual fighter fans catch the buzz. Arcana Heart did well enough and it had far more things against it (PS2 only, the whole schoolgirl thing) than BlazBlue. Plus, as you noted below, Battle Fantasia has become a bit of a rare title.

Spencer, woops Need to make my English more clear, I meant you left out this weeks major release! From my personal view the game of the year(I'm a bit strange though)!

  • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Oh? I did? What game did I miss? We <3 strange games.

If it's Call of Juarez I know I glossed that domestic release over since it didn't seem like something Siliconera readers would be interested in!

I pre-ordered BlazBlue for PS3 since I don't want to miss out on the first print LE w/ blu-ray and soundtrack. I can put my Hori PS3 fighting stick to good use other than Street Fighter 4 & Soul Calibur 4.

But I'm also extremely interested in Call of Juarez as I like the cowboy and Civil War setting a lot, recent good cowboy movies are 3:10 to Yuma and Jesse James. The wild wild west is quite fascinating to me, a good video game would be even cooler.

  • Chuck F

no no, it's not time for shooting! school's out, it's time for beetle battles, fishing, bug catching, 50 yen game arcades, exercise in the morning with the family, making hidden forts and oh so much more!

  • QBasic

Man, if you want your dose of cowboy badassness, there's a good amount of Clint Eastwood flicks. D:

  • QBasic

Actually, I'm relatively surprised myself; the game is getting even bigger buzz than KOFXII.

Then again….SNK screwed that one up, so call it “winning by default.” It's still a shame though, but when I think about it, to every 5 happy gamers who opted for BlazBlue, there will be 50 pissed off gamers who went for CoJ.

I guess it really is a wonderful world. :3
