Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Will Be The First “Z” Rated DS Game

By Spencer . July 6, 2009 . 8:29am

imageThis fall Japan gets the DS version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and it’s rated CERO Z, that’s like the equivalent of being rated AO by the ESRB.

All of the Grand Theft Auto games have been rated CERO Z so this isn’t really a shocker. However, Chinatown Wars will be the first Nintendo DS game with the rating and the second CERO Z game on a Nintendo platform. Killer 7 from Capcom is the other CERO Z rated game on Nintendo hardware.

Capcom usually publishes Grand Theft Auto games in Japan, but they are not handling Chinatown Wars. Cyberfront, the company that published the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV and the Princess Maker series, will take care of Chinatown Wars in Japan.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars has often been used as a centerpiece in a debate if M-rated DS games will sell. This fall Chinatown Wars will also be a litmus test for 18+ Nintendo DS games in Japan too.

Strange that Capcom’s not doing it… I wonder if Cyberfront stuck a more encompassing deal with Rockstar?

If you were Capcom, would you publish it? :P It’s going to fail even harder in Japan than it did in North America.

I dunno, CTW actually seems like it’d be more appealing to the Japanese. Top down perspective, cellshaded, on DS…

Yup, agree completely. I can see Japan potentially liking Chinatown Wars a lot more than other GTA games. It’s more creative, it’s on a portable, it’s stylized. Hell, that’s why I liked it more than other GTA games. :P

Haven’t even finished GTA IV yet (still struggling w/ the Packie bank robbing mission, almost escaped from the cops after a 10 minute gun fight).

I thought the GTA franchise has always done pretty well in Jpn for a western game under Capcom. I guess it’s still niche since Jpn gamers aren’t as crazy about shooting as Americans.
