Japan Gets It’s First Wave Of First Party UMD Legacy RPGs

image Sony has been re-releasing UMD classics like Jeanne D’arc as PlayStation Network downloads in every region except Japan. Today, Japan got their first taste of legacy games courtesy of SCEJ.

All of the titles Sony uploaded are RPGs. Blade Dancer, Rezel Cross, Popolocrois, and Jeanne D’arc are available, but aren’t the same price.

Let’s look at how much each game costs. I put the prices from Amazon Japan in as a reference point.

Rezel Cross – 3,800 yen ($40) on PSN / 4,397 yen ($46) at Amazon
Blade Dancer – 3,800 yen ($40)  on PSN / 4,404 yen ($46) at Amazon
Jeanne D’arc – 2,200 yen ($23) on PSN / 2,520 yen ($27) at Amazon
Popolocrois – 2,200 yen ($23) on PSN / 2,800 yen ($30) at Amazon

Why do downloads of Rezel Cross and Blade Dancer cost more than Jeanne D’arc? Sony never reprinted those games as Greatest Hits or PSP the Best games in Japan. It seems like Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is trying to keep their download prices close to retail prices even with old games like Blade Dancer.

Gosh, that’s pretty steep. I’d have thought that, considering Japan has such a well working used-games market, they’d price them a lot lower. It’s not like these are rare games that are difficult to obtain or anything.

Like Rezel Cross, which you could buy used from Amazon for 1485 yen and dump to memory stick yourself (or even play from that UMD if you were so inclined).

Play it from the UMD? Like a CAVEMAN?

The pricing isn’t terribly surprising, I guess. Game UMDs aren’t scarce by any means, so far be it for them to try and threaten/offend the tangible market (at least, until/unless the PSPGo actually manages to pick up steam).

Actually both Jeanne D’arc and Popolocrois have the “The Best” reprints w/ the ugly yellow top and shrunk down cover in the middle (while the other 2 games don’t), hence the lower prices.

A brand new first print Jeanne D’arc UMD is quite rare now, I got mine on ebay for around $50 or $60 before because I can’t stand the greatest hits reprint, and I don’t get games used either unless they’re 99% like new.

I saw these d/ls yesterday too when I was checking out the PC engine games. I’m interested in Rezel Cross and Blade Dancer but know nothing about them. If the digital copy is cheaper I’d give it a try, but 3,800 yen is too expensive.

Compared to Amazon some of these games are priced higher than 75%, but Amazon almost always adds their own discount to their prices.

The question is will Sony use 75% of RRP or 75% of street prices? I hope they adopt the latter. Consumers are used to prices decreasing over time.
