Frontier Aja Whips Up Doujin Style Castlevania

By Spencer . August 13, 2009 . 1:32pm

Speaking of being inspired, indie developer Frontier Aja looked at Castlevania while developing Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony, an upcoming PC title scheduled to debut this weekend at Comiket 76. (Thanks for the tip Destron Prime!!)

This video does a fantastic job explaining Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony. It even covers little quirks about hit boxes so I’ll let it take you through the game. I just want to explain a reference that might fly over your head. The main character, Reimu Hakurei, is part of a series of doujin or hobby developed Japanese games. She’s a key character in the Touhou Project, which includes a bunch of PC shoot ’em ups like Mountain of Faith from Team Shanghai Alice.

If you want to try  Koumajou Densetsu: Scarlet Symphony out you can download it here.

  • Touhouvania?

    I’m downloading now.

  • I’m spending about 200$ at C76, but this is the first time I read about this game. I might throw it on my list, the animation is extremely fluid and I absolutely loved SotN.

Huh, they don’t even list the booth number on their website.

    • You are going? Ugh Jealous!

  • Holy smackerel! That was good. I like how they mix classic and casltetroid style gameplay. Spriting and music are as good as any of the better Castlevanias too. Could do without the moe but there are maids in Castlevania so it’s not like it’s totally out of line.

    Touhou Hijack LOL.

There is a bunch of stuff i need to get from C76. Mostly Touhou related, but there is also the new Eikyuu Loop shooting game.

  • Okay that was awesome. The fusion of flying and shooting from Touhou and the game’s smooth animation and responsive control really made this one worth checking out.

Downloading the demo now. This thing looks damn good. I like how they left us hanging with that ledge the character could go through, then delivered when I least expected it.

  • Nice. Really really nice.

Almost makes me want to play it. But as I suck at these kind of games I´ll save myself the frustration.

  • lol

Sili actually linked to a friend of mine’s vid. Odds?

Well, considering there aren’t many Koumajou Densetsu vids with annotations…good.

  • Advent_Andaryu

Ah… Awesome!! I love Castevania… If this isn’t Konami, there’s no way they could sell it right? I mean it’s definitely a clone… Even the monsters! And the whip!

Actually I wouldn’t mind paying… I’m just saying it seems ‘too’ identical. This is very cool, is there some downloadable art somewhere? It looks fantastic.

    • Advent_Andaryu

Oh! The official site has some! Cool, I didn’t even notice.

    • Spekio

Actually they’re selling it for about $18. I hope it’s possible to buy it with a US credit card through one of the doujin sites they listed. Anyone have any experience ordering from any of the places that are selling it?

      • Advent_Andaryu

I would totally buy this for $18, the demo was amazing. I guess Konami doesn’t care since it’s relatively unknown.

If you need yen to order you can check Play Asia for those reloadable yen cards… I’m not too sure how else you could do it. I hope you find a solution, I would love to get this.

Touhou meets Castlevania?! OH GOD YES.

  • Greg

Is that sort of blatant copying legal?

    • You are obviously very new to the Doujin scene.
