Slim PlayStation 3 Set For September

By Spencer . August 18, 2009 . 11:20am

imageIt’s official, Sony will release a slim version of the PlayStation 3 that’s 36% lighter, 33% smaller, and $100 cheaper in the first week of September.

The PS3 Slim has all of the current PS3 features (read: no backwards compatibility) and includes a 120 GB hard drive. Sony’s latest model will cost $299, €299, or 29,980 yen depending where you live.

Current PlayStation 3 models will drop down to $299 starting tomorrow, but those only have 80GB hard drives. These remnant models are guaranteed to drop even lower when the slim PS3 arrives in stores.

THAT’S an acceptable price, why couldn’t they have done that, in the first place. instead of hat 1000 then 500 price tag

    • Aoshi00

Um.. because the original PS3 cost ~$800 to make? They’ve been selling it at a loss, maybe they should give you the system for free.

  • Hmph, I guess Sony still refuses to appease the droves of people clamoring for BC. Including it would have made the Slim a no-brainer upgrade for many folks. Perhaps a firmware update that addresses the BC issue, though I doubt it.

    Wow, really?

I mean, sure the rumors were flying around about the Slim, but the most I expected was a price drop. The backwards compatibility doesn’t bother me, since the PS3 really doesn’t like some PS2 games in the first place and has a bad tendency to delete save files. I’d rather just have another PS2 just because it’s safer. Even with my BC PS3 hooked up to the TV, I still play my PS2 games on the PS2.

I agree…me and my ps2 share plenty of quality time even with me playing my ps3…plus my ps2 was modded for imports so i woudlnt’ even be able to play a good chunk of my collection

  • MadMirko

I bet launch window customers are pleased…

MadMirko on the other hand welcomes this non-ugly, non-huge and not overpriced console and will proceed to pre-order one.

Smaller form factor and lower power consumption. Looks like i’m double dipping!

    PS3 Looks like soon.

And as always, the first Playstation console I buy from a generation is the Slim one :D.

  • EvilAkito

Man, I was going to buy a friend’s 80 gig, but I sort of want to hold off for the Slim now.

So glad they got rid of that ugly Spider Man font.

  • Aoshi00

I would really want the slim one since my current PS3’s fan is kind of loud once things get going.. No B/C is discouraging, but I didn’t expect them to have it, since this cheaper model basically surpasses the original design in every way except no B/C and two less USB ports. I do have the Jpn slim PS2 hooked up now, but I would really like to have a Jpn PS3 that is able to play my imports via HDMI upscaled. Too bad software B/C wasn’t reliable at all.

Even though the old clunker looked like a heavy barbecue grill/dust magnet, I can’t say this new design looks sleek at all, kind of tacky, maybe it’s just the picture..
