Nintendo Brings Bullet Hell To DSiWare

Arika, the developer that released Ketsui: Death Label on the Nintendo DS, is working with Nintendo on a downloadable DSiWare shoot ‘em up. Aa Mujou Setsuna is exactly what it sounds like — a ruthless moment.

The game has two types of ships. Type A (left) has a wide shot and a bomb attack that hits everything on the screen, but drains a third of your special gauge. Type B’s basic shot is slightly tighter than A. The real difference is the ship’s special move, a piercing laser and a bullet absorbing barrier. Absorbed bullets turn into point cubes, which you can pick up. Nintendo posted a movie that demonstrates the system.

Nintendo Brings Bullet Hell To DSiWare Similar to medals in Raiden Fighters cubes “level up” if you leave them on the screen. They start out as a purple block and turn goldenrod at level eight.

Players will have a chance to upload their high scores and replays over Nintendo Wi-Fi. For 500 DSiWare points ($5) you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. Aa Mujou Setsuna (loosely translated as A Ruthless Moment) arrives on DSiWare in Japan on September 2. A North American release has not been announced, but the game has English menus… and someone developing the game has a thing for aquatic life.

Probably has NOTHING to do with Arika being the developer of Endless Ocean HMM? :P

Hahaha… oh man the fact that they did Everblue and Endless Ocean slipped my mind :P

Thankfully shooters are easily localized. Come to daddy!

    Touhou is still harder.

Some of us hate Touhou with a burning passion, so the less Touhou the better.

As far as Arika goes, it’ll be interesting to see how an original shooter from them turns out–hopefully it isn’t just a clone of one of their PS2 Cave ports with a new coat of paint.

Sounds like the best DSiware game so far, still haven’t touched the 1000 free pts that came w/ the system yet. (just plucked down almost $200 on playasia for Otomedius, Shikigami 360, & Death Smiles, wallet cries :(…)

Dragon Quest Wars is pretty good for online play. It’s like a great 10 minute diversion. So far, it’s the only DSiWare purchase I’ve been impressed with. This might be the second.

Seems like it, it would be nice if they give us a demo of this, let us know if you’re doing a playtest.

I’m not too big on DQ, so…

I actually wanted to get some Game & Watch, not sure if it’s worth it to trade the DS copy w/ Nintendo club points.
